would anyone recommend a router or will any router get the job done?

Just remember that you get what you pay for...I'd recommend a Porter-Cable or a DeWalt with about 1.5-2.75hp, and a plunge router base. This will give you the most flexibility, and will become one of the most-used tools in your arsenal. If you pay less than about $200, you will wish you had waited for a while and spent the extra dough. If you can find a decent router like what I mentioned above in a pawn shop and they aren't ragged-out P.O.S.'s, then you can sometimes save some dough there. Craftsman is good for their replacement policy, but I've had a couple things of theirs go bad and the replacements weren't the quality of the original. But that's neither here nor there. Bottom line, buy the best one you can afford. You won't regret it. And get good-quality bits, no shortcuts there- would you really want to trust a router bit that was a Made In China $1.99 special to spin at 10-30,000 RPM four inches from your gut?
