Neck Pu Location

I just noticed my conrad jazz bass has its neck pickup almost right at the neck its about the exact location a neck pickup would be on a guitar..my question is is that bad? almost all of the basses ive seen and had had a neck pickup at the middle point and the bridge...could that be the reason why im getting a somewhat compressed sound and a very deep almost fretless sound?

Isn't this already IN the BG side of things, Ken? At the top it says

Maybe it's already been moved, and that's throwing me off...

As per your question, yes, the pickup being right up near the neck WILL make it sound different. That's just how the bass is designed. It's not "wrong" or "bad," just different.
