Need a bass that rivals a USA Cirrus

I recently missed out on buying a USA Cirrus and I'm kicking myself for it. (Had to pay for textbooks and other stuff :rollno:)

The Cirrus, in my mind, was the best value you could get. Everything a high end bass has, and great playability packed into a hard case and shipped out for about $1000.

Now I'm looking for something to rival it. Any ideas, fellow bassists?

  1. I've haven't tried many G&L's, but I wasn't crazy about the few that I tried.
  2. As far as Lakland's, I was thinking of a 55-01, but they get pretty expensive if you want the USA made ones.
  3. Rivals a Cirrus in playability, build quality, electronics, and general sound. Those things sound so damn amazing right out of box. Unf!
  4. A 5 string USA Cirrus would be for me. I haven't made the switch to 6. Lol.

Are they Korean made? The Milleniums? I got a USA fretless Cirrus in a trade .. I love the bass. Very nice weight/neck/feel/tone thing going on there. The guy I got it from had some tapes on there and I left them on .. but the bass is so nice it actually got me to thining about a fretted version..

I am referring to the MIA Millenniums that were made around 1999-2001, especially the J/MM fours and fives.

The skyline (non-American) Lakland's are top notch. The overseas builders know what they are doing, and do it well. You won't get a lemon and they really play just as well as the American ones I've tried. The Lakland's are a great deal! I don't know how they compare to the cirrus though. Good luck.

I have a USA Cirrus and love it. But also am about to get a Euro-built Spector. I have continuously seen good things posted about them. Was told the factory had been making high end violins before the basses were built there and that the craftmanship rivals that of the USA Spectors. Supposed to be really high quality.

Why not hold out for a Cirrus? Seems as though you want one, and getting one for under $1k is fairly easy. Look at as many used outlets as possible- eBay, craigslist (using SearchTempest), Guitar Center Used, Music Go Round, Sam Ash Used, Talkbass classifieds, etc. If you aren't picky about woods, there are plenty out there to be had.

My old USA Cirrus is for sale at Daves Guitar Shop in La Crosse WI for $450! It's 4 strings but has an added de-tuner. Give them a call if you are interested. I will vouch for how nicely that thing played. It just turns out I'm only inspired by p-basses.
