Need a loud amp that isn't big

I need to replace my Gallien Krueger Backline half stack. I want a louder amp because I play heavy metal and I want a grittier, eviler sound.

Now, I really cannot be lugging around half stacks or stacks that are as tall as I am unless it's really necessary. I like sort of a growly sound like Rex Brown, but I also like John Myung a lot. I'm a huge huge metal guy, but I have to play in a jazz band too.

My budget is in the multi thousands, two or three. Again, I really do NOT want a half stack and definitely double DO NOT want a full stack.

I fail to see how loud = grit, but if you like Rex Brown's tone, I believe he played the SVT 4-Pro (or at least was in the ads for them). That should get you the loud part with no problem. Mate it with a 410HLF and you should be in business.

A Schroeder cab would probably get you more volume than any other cab, by size.

Like 1000.00 Shipped if I remember correctly and that head has enough juice to add an ext cab if you need to at a later date.


You could also get Dr. Bass to build you an "airhead" 3x10 cab and just add the Gallien Krueger 1001 RB II head in it (or 2001RB if you want switchable real grit).

Again I'm really not sure grit is the right word....I'm thinking of like the Ellefson/Rex Brown sound...I'm not sure I'd describe that as gritty but that was the only word I could think of off the top of my head.

Mesa MPulse Venture. 600 watts, 2X12 combo. Fantastic OD for tubey grit, tons of clean headroom. Devastating sound in a fairly small combo, not cheap, but you say that's no problem. Check Mesa's website for all the details, this is the amp for you.

My Carvin BRX212 combo is about to be for sale. It's 800 watts, has a drive knob that will give you a good amount of grit, and is EXTREMELY portable.... plus it can be had for well under a grand. I love the sound of it, in fact I'm selling it because I bought the B1500 head, which is the same exact amp, but more powerful and in head form. I'm tired of being forced to use backline rigs at these NYC shows. Now at least I can bring my head when they say "No bass cabs allowed!"

That Mesa 2x12 Combo is all hype. I had one. Couldn't get enough bass out of it. The M-Pulse 600 head is awesome, the Venture 2x12 isn't, especially for 1600.00. Played alot of dropped D stuff and it was farting out all of the time.

Second the thumbs down on the Mesa. I actually don't even care for the M-pulse head. Mesa was one of those brands I always REALLY want to like, but it just never does it for me. I think the GK 1001/2x12 NEO combo is an absolutely incredible amp. VERY loud. You can add an extension cab with it as well.

How about an SVT 4 pro and a 21012 or 1212 Schroeder cab ?

My vote goes to a Schroeder 1210 or 1212 or two and a Stewart World 1.2 and a Sansamp RBI or something similar. That's a lot of volume in a small, light package. Given the sensitivity of the Schroders with that kind of wattage you'd be doing some damage.
