The 55-01 is great. For what it's worth, my first bass was a Samick 5-string. I paid like $250 used and it was great player. I used it up until I bought my Warwick, including a year of school.

Call them up and see what they have. They may be out of 500s (they're still pretty "small").Hey, I can't find any of the AP-500MM's on eBay. All I see is a bunch of 4 strings.
What about the Schecter Stilleto? I got a ton of milage out of mine. Good out of the box, with nice tight B.
I've tried a BB415 and liked it. Also, the Ibanez RD (cant remember the model, but it was very cheap, with case, $350) very nice.
I own an ESP C-305 and love it to death. The B is tight, it growls like a beast, and its dead solid. A little on the heavy side, but who cares it sound great. It has EMG Hz pickups with active preamp, but before you anti EMG guys go off, I pulled the active EQ out and went passive similar to a jazz. It really lets the tone breath better. And the Hz Pups in this bass sound awesome, nice mids and clear low end. Not boomy at all. Anyway, there's my 2 cents.
