Need a Punk Rock bass!

lots of good advice here. depending on how many guitarists and how heavily distorted they are, I might hesitate to do a ray especially if you play with a pick. the single pickup ray in that situation tend to get a little buried In my personal experience (even with mids boosted). I'd go thunderbird personally, or maybe an old ibanez roadstar P or PJ. maybe an older yamaha BB.

I never thought I'd see a bass that violated so many OSHA statutes in one shot! In fact, it's more like something halfway in between "ecological disaster" and "Hellraiser"!

Find something that feels good in your hand. Then change pick-ups to suit taste. Duncan has alot of great pick-ups. My 2cents.

I have played in punk bands for 18 years. I will say that the P bass is the sound. However, I can see why you would want to have something a bit more unique. I felt the same way. But I ended up with a P. Some great alternatives are the Peavy T-40. I just saw Tera Melos and the bass player had one, it sounded great. Also, LTDs are really well made. The make vintage 204, which is a P/J. I was really impressed when I tried it. And you'll have $100 left over to buy some quality strings and cables.
I'm not so sure about music man. I just never had any luck with active. However, Joe Lally did use one into a GK 800rb. That is the waiting room tone. So hey, maybe it could work.

My Ibanez blazer (p copy) is all I ever use for punk, plenty of grit in the single p pup, but the headstock doesn't have that familiar fender shape you might be trying to avoid. they run right about your price range, too. id definitely take a look at those

The Rickenbacker 4001/4003 is the perfect punk bass as is the Rickenbacker 2030, and of course the good old p-bass is a good chouce as well

for something out of the ordinary a Gibson G-3 is a good chouice.

I took my Carvin Ac50 to practice with my "edge" band the other night,really kind of as a joke,as i didn't think it would fit with the band sound. (Brash,loud,simple,fast). To my surprise,it kicked serious butt.(semi hollowbody piezo with tapewound strings) the trick was putting it through a VT pedal and 500 watts of power.....played with a pick,it was snarly and agressive sounding with a huge boomy bass,sort of like my old Danelectro Hodad. (Another good punk sound bass)

Look at what your favorite punk bands are playing and go from there...Also has alot to do with amp/effects etc.
