Need Advice from Fender Precision players

I'll chime in with my personal recommendation. In the last two years, I bought the Fender American Deluxe P, and J basses, and one feature I really like is the active/passive option. The workmanship was flawless, and they play, and sound great. I highly recommend them. The were in the under 1300 buck range new, including tax. There may have been a price increase since I bought mine, but I would not hesitate to buy them now, if I did not have them.

I picked this up for 1k recently. Pup swapped out for a Dimarzo and everyone's favorite 70's mod the Badass II bridge. Great player :) vintage prices are down I bet you could find a real nice 70's Precision for $1,200-$1,500.

Beautiful! Reminds me of my old '76..

Rumor has it that 2012 was a peak year.

Judging from what I've seen lately, that seems the case. But my sample lot is small. Definitely haven't seen anything worthy of the praise that the 2008-2011 models were getting and that's across the board. I think Fender is trying to be too many things to too many people. It was nice how they re-focused in 08 and brought it back to basics, but now it seems like they're hitting that pipe again and releasing anything their R&D team drops on their doorstep. I think the American stuff is suffering for it.

played a new midnight blue american standard p with a maple neck on saturday at the bass hang at jim's music center it tustin, that thing was really sweet, light, easy to play and thick sounding

if i needed a p bass i wouldn't have hesitated to buy that one

I'd go for a Mexican Fender "Classic '50" P-bass. More bass for the buck. Okay, you don't get a SKB-case with it (but a tweed case), but that's about it. Hardware is the same as on the American Vintage series, build quality is top-notch, and it sounds better (IMHO) than the AM.STD. It sure has a thick neck, and the vintage frets and small radius (7.25") isn't everyone's cup of tea, but sure try those basses out!

I currently use a '91 AVRI '62 P, sunburst/rosewood...I love it.

I checked out the new AVRI '63...loved that too.

I also checked out the MIM Classic 50s P...thought it was killer for the price.

If I had infinity dollars I'd buy a vintage early 60s OR a USA made Lakland P style (Bob Glaub/44-64). Seriously, most engineer/producers (as well as artists) these days know about Laklands...they're LEGIT.

My 'secret' for the P-bass sound that I use and love is this: Dead rounds. You still get nice overtones, which you don't get from flats, but after they die, they mellow out nicely, and you get a wicked thump.
I also use the old EMG P pickup, which I adore. It's not for everyone, but it's worth a look.

I recently got a Precision V. Other than the extra string, it's simply a P bass. USA made, burst tort and all. I can't wait to see the reaction from some of the Nashville guys I play with from time to time. They are always giving me crap about getting a P bass but I only play 5s these days. So, now I have a stinking P bass 5. I wonder if it will pass the smell test. Maybe if I put some flats on it?
