Need advice on a 90's Precision Bass

stock electronics are at higher risk of failure than aftermarket stuff when gigging mid priced equipment)

That doesn’t necessarily follow. About the only component that exhibits a moderate failure rate in a passive bass is the jack. Unless you’re in an area with high year round humidity, or the bass sits in an unopened case for a decade or two, the pots and pickups should last a very long time.

I usually change the electronics (I seem to convince myself stock electronics are at higher risk of failure than aftermarket stuff when gigging mid priced equipment) so I always consider swapping pickups while I have it disassembled.

Totally not true. I used to have a '76 Precision up until a couple years ago and it had the stock electronics (pots, jack, wiring) that were all 100% in working order with no issues. Yesterday bought a '94 Yamaha BB300 for $75 and all original and the jack, pots, pickup and wiring work flawlessly. If the pots work you're most likely not going to gain any thing by swapping them out with something new, you'll just be wasting your money.

If it has "Squier series" on the headstock, I'd offer 200. I'm not sure what they actually go for, and my squier series J is amazing, but they're as cheap as you can get while still having fender on the headstock.

Just be careful regarding price and originality. As stated here, it's unlikely to be a fake, BUT.... that's no guarantee it's original, or even all Fender. It could be a MIM neck on a no-name body, or Squier body. It can be totally unoriginal internally, as far as pots, pickups and wiring. In that case, it could be worth an offer of maybe $175-200.

Well, that Bass ended up not being the one for me. On to the next one.

… not as advertised, didn't care for it, had issues, heavy, light, wrong color, didn't like the guy, didn't like the gal, suspect it was stolen, wanted to steal it … ??

… we were holding our breath to fine out … care to share what you found with those of us that took the time to reply?? ;)
