Need advise on powerful stage rig, Mesa Subway cabinet selection

Hi Michael,

The 2.67 ohm load can be handled by the Titan by using the Titan's 2 ohm mode switch.

There are several viable combinations of cabinets that would work for you, ask Garey for his input.

I am working remotely, I probably won't be at the factory next week.
 
A pair of Big Blocks? So, 1200 watts just isn't enough, you need 2400 watts? Whatever for? You're not filling arenas, just bars and clubs.
To paraphrase me from a different thread:
  • If you're so loud that you become deaf, no-one will come to hear you play.
  • If you're so loud that your audience becomes deaf, no-one will come to hear you play.

Are you using lots of modulation effects (chorus, phaser or flanger)? If not, stereo doesn't give any added value. Others above have given very good advice about what stereo means for bass in a live environment.

Thank you for your reply to me post. I should have been more clear in my original post. Please see my reply to Omega Monkey, Wasnex and Aged Horse for a better description of my application. Basically, I’m after headroom and also a stereo set up. Hence, they two Titans. I am currently a an Aguilar DB680 tune preamp and for the last six years, QSC GX-7 driving two Epifani cabs...a DIST 410 plus a UL3 310. Pic attached. The QSC blew up, so I am now using my trusty Crown K2. However, this rig is huge and heavy!! It’s also sounds huge and heavy. I’m trying to put together a more modern and lighter rig that is as capable, not more so. Also, I’m going away from the HiFi studio monitor bass rig sound and really need a more rock forward sound from my rig. This is why I’m changing everything up. Been using PRS basses, both a 4 and a 5. Again, while these are incredible instruments and a great pairing for the Aguilar/Epifani rig, I find myself using a lot of exaggerated EQ settings on the preamp to get the time that cuts through in our band. I’ve played a Titan in the past and absolutely loved the sound. However, it was one of those that has issues and kept shutting down. I took it back to Boogie factory and they did a thermal upgrade. At that time, years ago, they didn’t have the entire issue yet understood, so I didn’t feel comfortable using that early gen Titan in my new band. I sold to a gentlemen who play in a lower volume blues band. I have missed that Titan sound ever since and really just been trying to emulate it with my current rig. When I saw two Titans for sale locally, I jumped. Boogie now completely understands what the issue was with the early gen Titans. Even though they are out of production, they still offer support. I have them fully upgrading both Titans, which actually lowers the output to 1000 watts. Since I’ve been using the QSC GX-7, a 1000 per channel at 4 Ohm amp, I’m not really getting a louder rig. I’m very much interested in the stereo FX possibilities with the Helix so this is why I’m looking at using two heads.

mom very cognizant of SPL and transients at high levels. We work hard in our band to take the snare and use our dynamics to perform at safe levels. We do get loud though and offer earplugs to our crowd and use them ourselves when needed. However, we spend so much time time chasing and investing in great gear we in the band all want to hear each other well. This amount of power in a bass rig delivers headroom and that is a bassist best friend next to clarity of your tone. I’m not cranked up all the time. It when we have powerful sections in some songs and I do a slide down on my low B string that I want everyone in the room to have a sub bass massage, off only for a fleeting moment. So there is not sustained kilowatt of bass going all the time. I try to play tastefully and reinforce the song, not hurt my band mates or the crowds hearing. It’s just most of the places we play, I need to supply bass to the entire room as there is not a full PA.

You raise a great point about traditional bass FX such as modulations not requiring a stereo set up. I totally agree. Our guitarist does not solo, so I do get some moments to play melodies. I’m also being asked by the band to start playing keyboards so considering the verbs and delays that Helix can deliver and adding keys, a stereo rig is my desire. I’m still undecided on splitting the cabs left and right of the drums for acoustic reasons. Although, it may be possible to adjust the left and right signals to be slightly different t enough to eliminate or minimize any unwanted acoustic issues. I will report back what I learn from checking with my FOH friends on this.

I would buy a 2x15 Subway and try it, and if that's not enough, buy another.

So cool to hear from another Titan V12 owner! Thanks for providing the attachment and insight about setup. Yes, I do agree that a split stereo bass rig with identical cabs (and signal inputs) left and right of the drums will in fact create comb-filtering, if not other undesirable acoustic anomalies. I’m all on the vertical array approach of stacking the cabs and projecting my sound from one location.

However, I have an idea about adjusting the left and right signals slightly differently and hopefully, Eloise or at least, minimize the comb-filtering issues. I explain more on this below...

Yes, thank you for pointing out the power handling of the Subway line. Only the 410 has the power handling to match the Titan. This has me considering a pair of 410s as the 215 and 212 don’t have high enough power handing to match the 410. I could use the volume of each amp to adjust so it’s not a deal killer. Im curious if two 115s with a 212 or 210 on top of each would stand tall enough. The 215 and 212 are 30” high so stacking these comes in at 5’ tall which is good. Will get try out the Subway cabs when I pick up my Titans from Boogie factory next week. Will come back with my findings.

Yes, you are on point about a split can set up aiding in guitarist and bassist hearing each other better. Especially, when we are backed up against a wall and the PA is 8-12 feet in front. We hate trying to hearing with all the room sound...slap back off the side and back walls. We spend a lot of time tone chasing and we very much enjoy hearing each other play. Since we do it use in ears or put anything in the monitors other than vocals, having both the stereo guitar cabs and stereo bass cabs split on both sides of the drums would help us self-mix better. Hearing each other well is so important and inspires us to elevate our performance. Plus, I am using more FX in our new material. With us both using Helix, we were thinking splitting would create some cool FX. We don’t have a lead guitarist, so I have an expanded role over playing traditional bass lines locked with the kick. We do a lot of odd meter time signatures and syncopated rhythms and I’m more like the other guitarist. I’m also going to start adding keyboard parts through my rig for intros and extended instrumental sections. I’m very much looking to utilize some bass pedal sounds and synth through the Helix/Boogie rig. I’m thinking these sounds will translate better in a stereo set up, considering that Helix allows for individual delay and EQ for left and the right channels of the stereo signal. Being that my guitarist will have the same, we can dial in when we are completely in unison and when we are totally different. Using a slightly different delay and EQ for each left and right of the bass signal should eliminate the comb-filtering issue or any phasing issues. I do have some friends that are FOH engineers at large venues and will inquire with them about this split stereo bass rig approach. Will share their feed back, in case others may be curious about this approach.

It's unlikely that your guitarist will want or need the bass as loud as you do. In my experience typically people prefer to hear themself about 6-10dB louder than everyone else. Since you have two Titans you have the opportunity to run one at a level that will push the room and meet your needs on stage. If you plan to split the speaker, the second stack be adjusted for the guitarists monitoring needs. He's probably going to want his guitar and vocals 6-10dB louder than the bass. If the guitarist's bass monitor runs at a significantly lower level than your main rig, it will minimize comb filtering. You may also be able to use a smaller speaker for the guitar monitor. I.E. less cost and less weight to haul around.

My advice is to audition the cabs and choose whichever sounds best to you. Then you can take a modular approach. If you like the 15s, consider buying a pair of 215s to handle the full power of one Titan and a pair of 115s that can be used however you see fit. If you like the 10s, you could probably get away with three cabs. Two 410s would serve as your rig, so you have the desire height and power handling, and the third cab would serve as the guitarist bass monitor when needed.

Something you might not be aware off, the Titans output power actually drops at 2 ohms. Here is the amps specs: 1200 Watts @ 4 Ohms (840 Watts @ 2 Ohms, 650 Watts @ 8 Ohms). So the amp makes max power at 4 ohms.

You also need to consider the benefit you get from using extra speakers. Theoretically a single Subway 410 will make 131.5dB with 1200W. I believe this is calculated so the real world figure would be a bit lower do to power compression. If you use a pair of 410s the power is split two ways, so each cab only gets 420W. Remember the amp only makes 840W at 2 ohms.

This will drop the dB of each cab by about 4.5dB. 131.5-4.5=127dB. However at low frequencies you get coupling between the cabs across the frequency range where driver spacing is within approximately 1/4 wavelength. Theoretically this adds +6dB. 12+6=133dB.


The difference in SPL between 131.5dB and 133dB is hardly noticeable. But remember the coupling only occurs in the low end so the sound will be a bit fuller. Also there will be less power compression operating the cab at 420W, so there may actually be a noticeable increase in SPL.

An important factor we have not considered is the 410 is mechanically limited to 925W at 79.9hz, so it really won't take 1,200W of heavy bass. Running a pair of 410s will significantly increase the safety factor for the cabs and you get about the same SPL with a bit fuller low end.

Compare the mechanical power handling of the 215 which is limited to 800W at 68hz VS the 410s 925W at 79.9hz. At this point the 410s 1200W RMS thermal rating really doesn't really give it much of an advantage over the 215s 800W RMS thermal rating, especially if you plan to run heavy lows. So I say pick the cab that sounds best and operate whichever your choose with reasonable expectations. Per the specs both the 410 and 215 have the same sensitivity rating.

Additional Fact
Avg Mechanical RMS from 50-1000z.
410 = 1000W
215 = 800W

The decibel different between 1,000W and 800W is ~0.97dB.

Regardless if which cab you choose, you need a pair if you are going to push the amp to it's limit...and then the amp will generate less power, so your stuck with sort of a catch 22.

Another factor to consider is some people have indicated their Titan has a tendency to shutdown when pushed really hard at 2 ohms, even with the factory updates.

That would be sick. I've played a lot of 4X10 and biamped rigs in the day, but the responsiveness of those particular 15s surprised me. You can always add more cabs later if it doesn't cut it. But then again, stereo effects on bass never really did it for me live. You really can't go wrong with that whole series of cabs, but in a side by side test, I thought the 15 in driver was tops. I could see that. Also, I feel like it would make it easier to focus on an individual player. The sound comes from the area that the player is.
I use two Subway 115s with a D800+ and they're loud and deep. I can't imagine needing anything more. If I wanted stereo I'd use two 215s. The Subway heads can run at 2 ohm, so one can be used for both 215 cabs. Not stereo though.

IMO the Subway 12s are unimpressive for rock. If you want 12s, look to Barefaced.

If I wanted height, I'd either put both 115s on something like a milk crate, or put the milk crate in between them.

But having height for bass isn't necessary. Bass frequencies go everywhere. If they didn't, you'd never see subs on the floor - where they make the lowest and deepest low end.

thanks for your recommendations. I’m defiantly interested the 215s and will demo them ASAP. If I like the 215, then it’s down to trying a 212 or 210 on top. My other curiosity is what two 410s would sound like.

Thank you so much for sharing all this relevant and informative data. I have been reading through everything you shared as well as the other replies. I’m so grateful for the TB community. Everyone is so generous and knowledgeable! It is helping me very much.

After my crash course in mechanical vs acoustic power handling of the speakers and the benefit of adding additional cabinets, which creates a desirable acoustic coupling, as well as learning more about how the Titan V12 delivers wattage at 4 Ohms and 2 Ohms respectively, I am backing away from going with identical cabinets or two cabinet stacked on either side of the drums. Wow, that could be the longest sentence I ever written! Hahaha!!

However, I will stay with a stereo rig approach to extract as much sonic juju from the Helix. Now it’s down to a pair of 410s, each powered by a dedicated Titan V12 so I can benefit from full output from the Titans. The other cabinet stack I’m considering is a 215 with a 212 on top, also with each cab driven by a dedicated Titan. Both of these stacks present an ideal load of 4 Ohms to the Titans. Hopefully, this will keep them running cooler than driving a 2 Ohm load.

I plan to be at the Mesa Boogie factory next week and hope to compare these two stacks. I will report back my impressions.

My suggestion is to rethink the whole stereo thing, the reason being that it creates issues that aren't nearly as big when you have closer to a single source (of course with multiple speakers you aren't going to ever have a true point source). As a long time touring act FOH engineer (in addition to my other "day jobs"), the fewer separate bass sources I have to deal with, the easier it is to fit the bass into the mix and the more consistent it will remain throughout the venue. Less is more when it comes to this, and by separate sources I mean signals that are closely related (correlated) but not identical when summed can introduce new problems.
 
Mesa has really good demo videos that highlight the tones of the different subway cabs (at least the 210, 112, and 115). To me, the 115 is the most open, the 112 is a bit tighter in the lows and has a bit more upper mid, and the 210 is a bit rounder and athick in the low mids bit still has a bit of upper mid presence.

Since prog is your thing, I would say skip the Titan, and look into the new TT800.

Yes, I’m totally abandoning the spilt cab stereo approach. Thank you for the great inputs, which were echoed by others as well. Its a bad idea on multiple levels.

My final question is which can to place on top of a vertically oriented 215. I do wish the 215 was wider when vertically orientated, so the 410 could be safely placed on top. This particular stack may not be stable considering a rack on top with the Titans. So it appears two single 115+210 stacks would be the same as laying down a 215 and putting a 410 on top. However, this defeats the bennefits of the vertical line array of standing up the 215. I’m also afraid of stacking an 8 Ohm with 4 Ohm cab together as the volume levels for the 4 Ohm will dominate the 8 Ohm cab.

IMHO if you really deem stereo effects essential, you might want to consider running a centrally located full range bass rig. Then use a couple of high passed satellite speakers that are located stage left and stage right for the stereo effect. You might as well run the high passed signal through the PA at this point.

Also, stereo in a live setting is not that useful because most people are not dead center, so they are not going to hear both speakers equally. If they hear primarily one speaker there will be no stereo effect.

Running a modeling rig with Titan also seems rather unusual. Typically one use modeling with a full range flat response system. The Titan definitely has a bit of it's own baked in voicing.

Thank you for you response and recommendations. I’ve had a Titan in the past several years ago and really miss the tone. Should have kept it. Been looking for one ever since and recently purchased two super clean low hour Titans from a local bassist. Already have one at Mesa Boogie undergoing the latest updates, while the other is at rehearsal. I plan to update the second one as well. So I’m all in on the Titans.

I have checked out all the available Subway videos and do agree the 15s sound fantastic! Also, Andy Irvine’s YouTube channel has several videos with various basses played through Subway cabs. I was most impressed with the 210. It seemed to have a nice full sound. A 215 with 210 on top has my interest. I’m just wondering if I can get the 8 Ohm 210 to volume match the 4 Ohm 215 without pushing it too hard. It might be too much to ask out of two for my application. I’m definitely going to try a 212 on top of a 215 and see what that sounds like. Will defiantly share back by findings.

I have abandoned the split stereo cab idea. Yes, I do realize using modeling bennefits from playing through FRFR monitors for guitarists. However, my interest in Helix is for the FX, oscillators and other goodies like extra I/O and the fact that is also a recording interface. Since I do like the baked in sound of the Titan, it is my failsafe to never have thin “digital” sound with the Helix. I plan to use the Titan for overdrive and distortion and the Helix for FX. I just need to decide on the cabinets. I’m leaning toward a 215 and either a 212 or 210 on top.

In your position, I would look at the 215 plus either 210 or 112 on top. Both of these will be more balanced tonally compared with the 410, especially if placed up higher on a 215.

Thank You Aged Horse! This is what I was looking for. I’m glad to read about how you believe the cabinets would best voice together. After checking out Andy Irvine’s YouTube videos on the Subway cabs, I really liked the 210 sound.

However, it’s not entirely clear to me how running mixed impedance cabs will work out. I’m thinking that the an 8 Ohm cab will be quieter than the 4 Ohm cab when powered by one Titan. Also, doesn’t the power of the Titan drop below 4 Ohms?

Should I still run a second Titan just the the 210 or would the 212 be better. This would place one 4 Ohm cab on each Titan. They also stack perfectly and at 5’ tall I could still log my rack on top. Also, individual control of each cabinet should allow me to dial in nearly any tone and have independent volume control for each cab. Perhaps, this will be easier for the Titans as they remain at 4 Ohm.

Can’t wait to compare a 215 + 212s stack vs a 215 + 210 stack!

With the Titan set in the 2 ohm mode position, it will drive a 215 + 210. The power distribution between the drivers will be good, and the sensitivity is plenty close.

Consider this the same as 2 x 115 cabs at 8 ohms each plus 1 x 210 cab at 8 ohms. Each of these cabinets would receive 1/3 of the amp's power and the sensitivity of each cab would be very close to the same.

Breaking it down this way should make it easier to understand.
 
I curious as to why you are so married to the idea of a 410/210, if you've not heard a 215 or two 115s?

If I were doing this from the start, I'd be looking at two 215s.

However, I have two 115s, and were I in your position with the equip I already have, I'd add ONE 115 in a stack and call it a day. When I had a 112, I stacked the two 115s and the 112, and it nearly blew me out the door, and I'm not sure the 112 was adding anything to the sound. Three 115 cabs would be that much better by a factor of something that's good.

I don't know the amp of which you speak, but having used three of the four Subway heads, settling on the D800+, cranking the Plus with the deep and bright switches engaged into three cabs will fry your pork.
