Hey everyone, hope y'all are doing well. I'm looking to start a build/project within the next couple months, and have run into a couple questions. First, here's a run-down of what I'm looking to build.
- 4 strings,
- Body: precision-bass, with a nice forward, growly pickup
- Neck: fretless, JAZZ profile neck. The 1.5 mm nut/thin profile is a must, although I would be open to the slimmer p-style necks (like the ones on American Specials, the Fender-Nate Mendel, etc.) I would prefer unlined, but if no other options arise, I'm okay with lined.
- Looking to hopefully keep this around $600 if possible.
I already know what pickup, tuners, bridge I want, but I have a couple questions about the body and neck itself.

My questions:
1.) What are my best options for finding an empty p-bass body? I've checked out Warmoth, but the issue is I don't have the skills to finish a body myself - Warmoth's finished bodies are pretty expensive. :(

2.) I know that the Fender MIM lined fretless neck sold by Fender themselves is always an option, but if I'm going to be picky about unlined and the fact that I really like MIM necks, are there any MIM unlined fretless jazz necks out there?

3.) Is there anything I should look out for in terms of fitting a jazz bass neck into a precision bass neck pocket?

TLDR: ~$600 Fretless build. Looking for the best budget empty precision body, and (preferably unlined) fretless jazz neck. As well, advice on mating a jazz neck with a precision body.

Thanks!! :D

1) Ebay or Reverb will get you tons of options. The Stratosphere sells loaded or unloaded Fender bodies.

2) I am not aware of MIM Fender unlined fretless necks. You can get one from All Parts that should fit in a fender body, though.

3) No. That is a common combination. Standard MIM Fender four-string bass parts should fit other standard MIM Fender four-string parts (or fender licensed parts). There may be an exception for Tele-style (slab) P bodies, which may have flat heel pocket ends like the original Precision basses.

Good luck assembling your bass!
