Well, it's not easy to find the correct tools...
I didn't really have time to read all posts thorougly when I brought up Le Bass as an idea.
It's very versatile as a preamp and to my ears it's even nicer than other offerings from DarkGlass or Tech21, but it's certainly not a "press a button and everything is solved" kit.
Also, the DI out on it has some noise (about +10dB compared to it's line out).
I started building my gear with a Digitech BP-355, which has stereo XLR outputs as well, I even gigged with it using just the pedal, some Behringer bass amp the venue had as monitor and going through FOH and it was ok. However I am not a big fan of it's amp models, eq and compressors. Also used it for a gig with a rented PA system, where it sounded much better as I was able to eq out some of it's boomyness (if this is how you say it correctly). Of course it's all about personal preference...
Actually building a pedalboard around a good preamp might just be the way. I don't find changing eq settings a real big issue with an active bass (although the 3 position preset mid pot really helps on my Yamaha BBN5A). If you're not afraid of tweaking a zillion of parameters with a computer, the TC SpectraComp is a great and cheap solution for compression. Also DI out problems can be solved quickly with a quality DI box, that way you don't have to worry if your preamp/multieffects unit doesn't have a decent DI out.

Personally I use them reluctantly when recording, and to my ears most VST effects with this purpose do a better job.

Very good point about a multiFX being able to drive a power amp. From my experience the Digitech BP-355 can be used as a very nice clean boost (and I still use it for that and some of it's effects) and should be able to drive any power amp without problems. So maybe the BP8 can do that as well?
Also here's and idea: since the OP likes the compression and eq of his BP8, it might be worth trying to plug that into a nice preamp. That way he can get some various eq/comp settings from the BP8, while the preamp takes care of making it sound nicer and providing a DI out.
Yes it will - check the "Zoom B3 as a Pre-Amp" threads here for lots of info. I run my bass into one, and then into a Peavey IPR3000 poweramp (formerly I used a QSC GX5) which drives two fEARful cabinets.
