Need help choosing a bass

Hey, as the title says i need help choosing a bass, it will be my first bass because i've been using a borrowed one until i get my own, i recently went in to my local music store and tried out an Epiphone thunderbird Pro and absoloutely loved it, but its out my budget for a first bass. Im looking for something around £150-£250, and if you know of any within that price range that are comparible to the T-bird pro then let me know, thanks:D

I'd reccomend you try out basses through your regular amp to get a better idea of what it will actually sound like. The store will let you do that.

Aye, i should of done today, ill be back there next weekend though, oh and btw people, would active or passive pick ups be best? I really should buff up on my bass knowledge, but atm i have no idea which would be the better option

Passive pickups are quite rare. You're very much more likely to be dealing with a passive BASS, which means it has normal pickups but an active preamp inside the bass.
As to which is better, that is entirely up to your preference. It's all in the sound.

In the end I managed to get a Peavy Grind BXP for around £180, but I had alot of problems with it which I wont go into, so I took it back to the store and they said they wouldn't have any others in stock for a while, so they said I could return it and choose another one, and I picked a Squier VM fretless jazz, poor decision! I'm buying a J bass fretted neck though and fitting that on :)
