need help identifying source of Noise....

I've recently discovered a strange noise coming from my Bass(Pensa J-4 Active and passive). After having it plugged in for about 2-3 minutes it starts to make a noise very similar to the sound that one would hear dialing between radio stations i.e. pure white noise, static, etc. If I take it out of the active phase the noise stops but will continue again when I place it back into the active phase. Could this possibly be related to a faulty switch or pre amp? It's something that obviously takes time to warm up and then act up. Any clues would be much appreciated. Thanks

It did make me think about the possibility of the new battery not being up to snuff. Where do you guys store your 9 volt batteries? I've been keeping mine in the bass case. Maybe that's not the best place???
