need help urgently!

i have a westfield jazz bass with two volume controlls, the top volume controll is messing up, every so often it sort of reverses.

when its fine i turn it clockwise to turn it up, now i have to turn it counter-clockwise and the tone is horroble and finger noises are up horroble.

do i need to get it replaced or is there anyhting else i can do?

seeing as my new amp has just arrived i really wanna try it out without it messed up

please help.

Sounds like dirt in the pot -try spraying contact cleaner in, it could also be the track in the pot, if it is, a new one would be best. TBO if the contact cleaner dosen't work it's a new pot.

update: tried it again and it worked, plugged it into my chorus pedal and the same problem flicked up again.

twas working fine before i plugged it into my chorus pedal, but then even if i take it out and plug into my amp normally it still has the same problem, but then eventually works.

It's certainly a problem with the pot itself or the input jack...nothing to do with the chorus pedal or the amp. Have ou tried the contact cleaner yet? Detox-It makes a great one, and you can get it for real cheap. Otherwise I'd try changing the pot...they're like $2. If you have a soldering skills it can be fixed in a few minutes.

Does it crackle when you wiggle your cable around? Have you tried a different cable? Does it still do it? Are all connections tight?

not tried the contact cleaner yet, but will do as soonn as i get some.

it doesnt crackle. tried 2 other cables, yes it still does it. and they are tight.

right, i used contact cleaner, and it doesnt sound quite as crap but its still reversing with slighty better tone.

for a free, quick attempted fix, take the knobs off, go get your vacuum cleaner and put on the smallest head attachment. Then vacuum the pots to try to suck dust/dirt out. I did it with an old stereo receiver that had scratchy pots. They were so bad that i couldn't even use it, the pots still scratch a little sometimes, but it got it to the point that the pots still work most of the time.


*oh, i see you've already tried contact cleaner, and if that didn't work, this is unlikely to work also*

hmm, i'll try that aswell.

i'll probably end up getting it replaced soon though.
