Need help with "reverse dead spots"...

Currently, I can't move the half-stack and play it because it's 11:35 PM in The Hague and my dad and neighbors would go crazy, but I do hear a difference when I stand 3ft. from my amp as opposed to 6ft. when I play it, so I think I get what you're trying to point out.

I also figured that I would need to adjust the EQ everywhere I go, but I see this as an advantage as it allows me to balance out my tone wherever I am, and I usually write down my 'at home settings' for other effects as well, as those can also sound different through different amps and such when I go over to friends and bring along some stuff.

Would the 31-band EQ rpsands mentioned help me out, or is this overkill? If it isn't, what brands make them? If it is, what else would be a good thing to check out and by which brand?


may I politely suggest you try my suggestion above....before you start spending money.

I know I don't know anything about bass "sonics" but, it is worth a try.

I did try it through just the tuner as well, and even though I noticed some overtones, they didn't seem all that prominent, but this could be because of my tuner, which isn't really chromatic, just for tuning your bass and guitar. It's a Korg GA-40.

Next Tuesday, when I'm having lessons again, I'll ask my teacher to let me research my bass' overtones in-depth with his chromatic tuner, I think that should pick them up if my GA-40 missed anything.

Most EQs is that they cover the entire spectrum. To adjust for room modes and boundaries, an ideal "bass EQ" would have all 31 bands between, say, 30Hz and 600Hz.

A standard 31-band will only have about four bands that will help.

A big problem with boundaries is that the effect depends on where you stand. So if you EQ it to sound OK at 3 ft from the speaker, someone in the audience may completely lose those notes. Others will still hear too much. This tends to make EQ unhelpful.

You can never change the room dimensions, so you can't really fix the problem. EQ may help a bit, but not much. You just have to live with bass vs. rooms.

So is there really nothing I can do to at least help me keep my sanity at home?:p

I understand I can't change the rooms and their effect on the sound, but as I spend most of my time playing at home, isn't there a way (using an EQ or something) to reduce the wolf tones a bit? I can live with it if the answer is no, but I would very much prefer something that does help out to balance the output, because I always aim for a sound that is as balanced as possible, and it sometimes gets very frustrating when it seems impossible to achieve that.
 
Technically, what you're hearing could be boundary conditions in the room. With the amp against walls, floors, and ceilings you will get a boost in certain note frequencies.

with this in mind, has the OP tried getting the cab off the floor.....even just a bit? Sometimes just a couple of inches can help.
 
If the room sounds "bad," you can help the problem somewhat by moving the amp, as said earlier. Try both different places in the room and rotate it to face different directions in the same place. Sometimes, you may hear even a slight change in amp position.

My old practice room sounded bad. My amps always sounded a bit harsh in there, and my Redhead didn't need any help in that area. The room, on paper, should have been decent. It has the ceiling at different heights, a carpet floor, and the two long walls are not parallel (thanks to some poor carpentry!). I always thought it sounded like poo, though. It took some pretty extreme eq-ing to get a "good" sound in there.

I eventually quit practicing in that room.
 
Try putting the amp about a foot from the floor. Here in the US we often set cabinets on Invalid Link Removed.

The amp may be coupling to the floor. Try placing it on a soft pad to see if that helps.

Soft furniture does a fair job as a bass trap. Try moving the amp to different places in the room till you find the best place.

yes SOFT furniture will absorb some of the sound, and refract as well, just like when you set up and do sound check in an empty hall, and it sounds like crap, then, when people are in the room, refracting and changing the acoustics,it sounds great.
