Need opinions on Lace pickups

I love the Alumatone Bass Bar's in my 5 string Active bass. Very clear, clean, excellent tone with good lows, sweet mids and smooth highs.

Yes! I put them in a passive P, but they’re so much cleaner than the SD vintage ones that were in it. Definitely my main player now.

Got them installed today. My first impression is that they are a very clear and articulate pickup compared to the Seymour Duncan SPB-1 that came installed in it. It still has a very good low end but it just sounds very clear and doesn’t get muddy. Drop tuned sounds very good as well. I get what the hi-fi hype was all about. I’ll give a better review when I take it to practice on Wednesday and try it in a full band setting.

Also, they do get mounted on a piece of foam just like other pickups. I didn’t see it in the photos, but there is a piece of metal going across the bottom. The same pickups work for 4, 5 and 6 strings by mounting them in certain directions.

I have the J bass Alumitones in a fretless Fender Jazz. Similar story there. Clean, clear, ‘hi fi’ is a good description….clarity and balance across the string’s full spectrum.

I've had a PJ set of Man O Wars in an Affinity Squier bass for a couple of years. They live somewhere between vintage and modern in sound, they would work well for any style music in my opinion. I'm keeping them.

I lived on Governor's Island during the winter of '75-'76 (Intensely COLD - the Long Island Ferry couldn't run for a while!). I too have been curious about the Alumitone P's...

Thanks for the inside look. Those are the clearest and best pictures I've seen of the pickups, can really get an idea of them from that. I love the Man o' Wars, seems like these are pretty cool too!

I've had a Man o' War set in my G&L JB since about 2015, and I think they're great. I don't think of them as modern, but they don't sound like traditional J-bass pickups either. They have fatter low mids and less, and in a band mix can sound almost like a P-bass. It's a very versatile, totally old-school tone--just not traditional J-bass tone. I have read others report a more modern tone with more treble, so maybe they have their pickups set closer to the strings than I do.

I’ll add something else to my review of the Aluma P’s. I used them at practice last night and had to adjust my EQ on my Darkglass X Ultra a bit. I use that as my ‘always on’ pedal and leave my amp set flat.

Where most P pickups have a certain baked in tone, these have a very even tone across all the strings. They’re not sterile or lifeless sounding, but they are almost like starting with a flat EQ. It’s like there’s not too much of each frequency. It’s hard to explain. It’s different from any other pickup I’ve tried, but in a really good way.

I just adjusted my EQ sliders to my liking and played. I’m definitely a fan of these pickups and will most likely be getting another set for my other P.

I had to sell that bass they were in and haven’t gotten another set yet. My main player now has a SD quarter pounder P in the neck and a DiMarzio ultra jazz in the bridge.

Ok, thanks for your reply. I was just checking as I bought a P/J set and putting them in my parts build. There's not really a lot online (that I've found) with sound samples etc. I'm just wondering what to expect.............
