X2. D'Addario EXL 170 (.45-.100) is a good all around set.
I have used them on passive JJ and PJ basses.
They seem to have a little less tension than the GHS Boomers I used to use (also good strings).

If you want a pure round wounds the DR line seems to have the best selection and they're very popular around here.
If you want to go with something a little mellower then the GHS PressureWounds I use on my JBass are an exceptional all purpose string. There are quite a few of us using these as well.
Don't ask me about flats because I would never put flats on a JBass.

I've used round wounds for many, many,.........many, 30+ years, on my jazz basses.
Recently tried a set of D.A. Chromes flat wounds on my R.W. jazz.
Absolutely LOVE em'!!!
Fat, smooth, with some high-end crunch.
Their sound sets very well in the 6 pcs. country/rock group I work with.
Depends what sound you want. I have Rotosound (forget the exact 'model') superlight steels at the moment on my J - great for slap, not so good for other styles. Fender nickels are great value. I'm off for a set of DRs next, used to have them on my Warwick and they were the balls though expensive.
Same here! Had been using rounds on my J for over 20 years now, but since experimenting with using flats on a P, I'd grown dissatisfied with the roundwound sound on the J--worse than zing, it was more like an unpleasant sizzle no matter how I EQ'd, etc. I still had a set of Chromes laying about whose sound I hated on the P, and decided to try them out on the J. Nice surprise! Still a little heavier mid-range emphasis than I'm used to, but that means more room for error if I scoop the tone, and also I'm able to dial in sounds from both the "rounds" and "flats" sides of the tone spectrum since they have a more pleasant zing and also some thump...and they are very slappable. A Flea-like tone for one song, a Duck Dunn tone for the next...
