Double Bass Need to put a reference on my Eb bass!

Hello double bass friends,

I would like to know if somebody try to put extra wood in a Eb double bass neck to make it feel like an D neck? I would like to have the D as reference for my thumb I don't want to put a false nut or change neck ( the bass sounds great).
If anyone has ideas or photos it would help a lot!!

D will be exactly 1/3 of the distance from nut to bridge. It’s a lot of work if you want to try.

Yes I will try ( well my luthier) I'm not familiar with inches, what it's the equivalence in centimeters? My doublebass is 104 cm spielmensur ( string length?.

Your D will ideally be at the 34 ⅔ CM measurement. Deflection from actually stopping the note vs just playing the harmonic right there will of course make it slightly different, but you'll be in the ballpark.

But I would also just suggest practicing with your bass a ton and getting used to the E flat being your landmark rather than a D. It shouldn't take more than a few days before you just stop thinking about it.

With an Eb neck you can put your left hand thumb under the middle finger instead of below the pointing finger.

Heck, just do what I do. Slide down to the heel, but be sloppy and incompetent enough doing so that you only nail the Eb every once in a while. With that approach, you'll nail the D PERFECTLY maybe 1/3 of the time!

Works just as well w/ D necks!

I have two basses, one has a D neck the other an Eb. I never thought about until one of these discussions came up. It has never been an issue and shouldn't be.

Just practice. If your brain refuses to adjust, you could hammer a small brad into the back of the neck behind Eb.

Plus, E flat necks are nicer if you want to do the Violone thing and tie on some gut frets. You'll actually have an entire fifth of fretted notes available, not a tritone!
