Need tube dirt in a box.

So in my past experience I've used a few "cheap" distortion pedals on bass but they were "guitar" pedals and it seemed that they just made the bass sound like poop. But that was a long time ago. What distortion pedals do you guys use. I really would like to maintain the low end without it being too flabby. I really am looking for kind of a cranked ampeg sound.

Way Huge Pork Loin. It's very transparent and keeps the low end 100%. You also have curve shaping and tone adjustment as well as the ability to blend in clean tone.

I've liked what I've heard from the EBS Valve Drive as well but I don't have one yet. That has a tube in it so it may be more what you're looking for, but from what people have told me it's not as transparent and colors your tone like a Sansamp BDDI or VT Bass might.

Catalinbread SFT, designed from the ground up to emulate a cranked Ampeg. I recommend the newest version, which is blue and silver. To me this is the best sounding incarnation.

Also in this category...Way Huge Pork Loin and Empress Multidrive. I recently sold my SFT and Pork and now use the Empress because of its versatility, but if you only want that one sound any of them would be stellar.

+1. For a pedal that doesn't actually have a tube, this one reacts just like a tube amp. In he same vein but less common because no one actually manufactures them is a Flipster or a Ginger.

You really can't go wrong with one of the darkglass pedals. the b3k and the vintage microtubes pedals would be right your alley on getting a tube dirt sound in a stomp box. another good choice would be either the ebs multidrive(if you want an overdrive) or an ebs metaldrive(if you want distortion). I plan to get an ebs metaldrive real soon. I do like the smooth heavy distortion sounds that this pedal delivers. so I will be buying one for my live set-up.

SVT-CL is in a box.

+1...million to this. However i am really just looking for a good stop gap for between now and the day i actually break down and shell out that kind of money. There seems to be a lot if good advice here. The porkloin is carried locally at a store i visit frequently so i can try it out. No such luck with the bluetube and the vt bass. Will i experience any frequency rolloff with any of these?

Btw this will be going into a gk goldline head with several options on the cab.
