Need working band gear advice

4x10's are popular, but more than is needed in a lot of situations. Dual 2x10's is just as good and much more flexible and easier to transport. But I've recently moved to dual 1x12's and I love it. I can get away with 1 of them on some gigs and, let's be honest, if a gig requires more than the dual 2x12's and doesn't have decent sound support, there are going to more issues than my bass lacking a bit. I guess some people play in louder situations and *need* more stage volume, but if you're not one of them don't kill yourself hauling around more gear than you need.

In about 20 years of live performance, I don't think I've ever been asked to turn up and had nothing left to give. I get asked to turn down plenty, no matter what gear I roll with.

Thanks for the good info. After reading all the posts I think I would like a 210 and a 212 that stack neatly. I just bid on a tc electronics 212...we'll see. I may have to go Avatar for budgetary reasons.

I use a Trace Elliot 1X15 combo 7215SM. It covers most gigs and I am hardly ever DI'ed through a PA. It will drive a second cab but I have only once added a 4X10 for a gig. It did sound pretty good though.

The combo has a ply panel fitted to the bottom, to which are attached wheels (not castors). There is a leather strap on one of the side handles for pulling it along, saves a load of lifting. I can drag it down 2 steps without needing to lift it, any more and it tends to run over you. The hardest job is lifting it into the car. The ply protects the rat fur on the bottom and I have a tough cover. It has done hundreds of gigs and is in near new condition.

If you have a 2 ohm capable amp maybe consider an 8 ohm 1x12 and 4 ohm 2x12 combination. S, M and Large options.

I'm using a Fender Rumble 100 210 for stage. I usually go through the PA 90% of the time so the Rumble is just for stage volume. There are a couple place we play that I use the amp alone, but they are usually so small that it really doesn't matter.

In the usual bars around here, I have been using a single 1x10 as a personal monitor. We all have a little bit of the bass in the IEMs, and the FOH takes care of the what the audience hears through the subs. It's been the best setup for us so far. The hardest part has been moving my beer from my rig to the subs because it's too low to reach down and get...

The black rug under my rig? That was part of a raised stage they set up for us. It was a nice corporate gig at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, NJ. Beautiful place.

I checked out 4 working cover bands in my area and ALL the bassists use 410 cabinets. Anyone out there in a working band that uses a different setup? I'd love a pro option that I can easily move in & out of my toyota's trunk but that still gets the job done.


My thoughts were 2 210s or 2 light combo amps. The new Carvin Microbasses look sweet.

I read other posts on similar topics but am still searching for answers.

I prefer 2 2x10 cabs to a 4x10. I built my own cabs. I have 3 2x10, 2 1x15, and 1 1x18. All are 8 ohms and similar in size so they can be mixed and matched for different gigs.

2 2x10s are lighter than a 4x10, They are easier on your back and fit into small cars better. They can be stacked vertical or horzintal, or split on both sides of the drummer. I like to use 200 to 400 watts of ampeg amp to power them.
