Needing info on multitrack portables...

Hello to the group,
Needing help deciding what multi track recording device to buy. I had a Tascam DP-01 about 100 years ago, but as I recall, it was very difficult to get your recordings onto a computer. Maybe I should just say what I want to do, and then maybe you can tell me which unit would best suit my needs.
I obviously am the bass player and drum machine programmer, so I lay down the rhythm sections of a song, then I need to email that to a friend about 400 miles away that lays down the guitar parts and he then sends it to our vocalist, who lays down lyrics. She sends it back to me to edit and mix. I need a decent machine that can handle this without breaking the bank.prefer 8 tracks. Suggestions?

You could probably be fine with the series one mixpre6. It should be cheaper as well with the new version out.

I'd recommend checking out the Zoom F8n. I have the regular F8 and I love it.

Been looking at the Zoom F8, & Tascam dp008ex. But I’m still looking. They are both a little out of my price range since I just bought the new bass. Thanks, I we will take your suggestion under advisement.

Keep an eye on the used market. With the new 32 bit recorders just now hitting the streets, people will be selling off their F8s and series one MixPres.

New portable recorders are great but imho the tracks will to import to a daw to finish things up.

And honestly some Laptop PC + interfaces can be very portable. Recording directly to a daw.

Keeping the song in a project file can be very handy.
Several midi tracks and several audio tracks. The raw tracks and processed versions of the same.
Mail around the project. Some daws have version history of the project so you can check what changed throughout the project. I Hope

The Zoom F4 and F8 / F8n can't do overdubs. The H6 can. For 300,- with two stereo mic-capsules the H6 is very good for 300,-. Another advantage is that you can use it as an audio-interface with 6-ins, too. Due to its size it is not as easy to operate as for example the R8. But on the other hand, it is very handy if you want to use it for field recording, recording gigs etc. I own the MixPre 3, too. The musician plug-in is great, but it is not as intuitive to use as the Zoom IMO and more than double the price without mics. I use the MixPre mostly for videos because it has timecode. The quality is there. The Zoom H6 is superior in sound quality to the R8,R16,R24, esp. the mic preamps. If it has to be a multitrack unit with the functions and operability of a real mixer, the new Tascam Model 24 (900,-) and the Livetrak-line from Zoom (500,- for the small one) are interesting.
