When I was 14, Kiss Alive came out and I thought it was the greatest album ever. It is the reason I started playing bass. Of course, I've grown up a little since then.....

Gene and Paul are absolutely two of the silliest humans walking the earth today, but Gene has been refreshingly candid about his musical apiratiosns over the it has very little to do with being a great bass player.
In a way, his contribution to bass is similar to Paul McCartney (though I would never compare the two as players)in that caused a lot of young people to be aware that a thing called a bass existed. Just as a whole generation of bass players started after seieng the Beatle son the Ed Sullivan show (and if you're doing it to get chicks, you gotta copy 'the cute one', right?), a lot of kids who dressed up as Gene for halloween decided to learn bass becuase that's what the demon played. I'm sure that there are some very accomplished bass players who started out pretending to be Gene on the playground. He's like Speed Racer or Ultraman- a cartoon.
And there's nothing wrong with the Monkees!

Gene Simmons is right alongside Mark Hoppus and Fieldy on my list of favorite bassist.

During my rather short time of being a TB member I've come across Mr. Simmons' name a lot more often than for example Bill Wyman's! 
I've been a huge KISS fan for years and I've read tons on them, and didnt read anything about Gene not actually playing bass on the albums, I knew about Ace not playing on several (some of Alive II, Creatures, Psycho Circus, Destroyer, etc..) but I knew nothing about Gene not playing.
