Can anyone describe / compare the Proton? Maybe what they like or dislike.
Perhaps a comparison to the GR.
Saw the video and thought it was OK but not a mind blower.
FWIW, I have a Mutron that I bought new that seems to be working as designed and didn't immediately hear the connection.

i picked mine up today. having never owned a mu tron or a gr/gr2 i can't compare them. i have otoh owned many popular filters on the market and have stuck with my ebs bassiq for many years. i immediately put it on my board and compared to my bassiq in which the ebs won hands down but i think i jus haven't gotten to know the proton well enough to do a fair shootout. i unplugged the ebs and have been fiddling with the proton for a few hours, i must say this is very versatile whereas my bassiq has only 1 great sound. plus the battery was going dead in the first bass i tried it with so i changed it and am back on track. i need some more time to thoroughly explore it, even tho there is only 2 knobs and 3 switches.
can anyone post their favorite settings? mine so far is:
gain- 12 (ish depending on bass)
peak-3:15
range:down
band:down
sweep:up

I'm having much recording trouble today, but I just threw this comparison together really quick:



Proton and GR don't sound drastically different, at least listening back to this. Biggest difference for me is the "warble" the GR can have in its decay, which the chords at the end demonstrate. Proton doesn't do this nearly as much.

The GR2 is more sensitive - that's the warble you're hearing. You can get rid of it by backing off the sensitivity control and/or cranking the attack control up a bit.

Thanks for the attack tip.

It happens at any sensitivity for me, but I played around with it a bit and discovered for the first time that with the attack set at noon or higher the GR warbles much less, pretty much comparable to the Proton. But, at that setting the GR doesn't have the bubbly funkiness that I dig about it. For me the proton can get less of the warble with more bubbliness compared to the GR. Mileage may vary.

i agree with what you are saying about the GR, that can be quite annoying but lucky i dont really use it for chords.

GOt mine and i think its incredible. It sounds so old school and its VERY versatile, the range of tones you can get is incredible. My favorite setting is full gain, 3 peak, range down, band up, and sweep up. Deinfetly the one i stay on 90% of the time playing with it. The band down is better if you play low notes, but for slapping and popping i feel u need the band up. Great pedal though, but i have really no other envelope filter to compare it to. It sounds like a dream on my fretless, a keeper of a pedal.

I don't really play chords with a filter either. It demonstrates that particular quality very well though. In practice I hear it coming through a bit when I slap, not really at all with my fingers. I couldn't get decent slap recordings last night (interface issues).

I love the envelope warble! It's one of the best features of my 70s BassBalls and 70s Funky Filter. This makes me very interested in the GR2. I've been debating as to which way to go and given that the Funky Filter is the Mutron circuit, I've got that covered pretty well.

I think you should buy one then meet with me for an original Mutron comparison since we are both in boulder.:ninja:

I'll bring the beer.:p

If it sounds like the real deal and can be modded with blend I'll buy one.
