Double Bass New Acoustic Image 'DOUBLESHOT'

So a little update/shout out to AI. I have an early version of the DS and apparently the speaker grills were prone to a fluttering sound. I sent it back to AI. Rick and Co. had it back to me with the new speaker grills in 5 days. Plus, they modded the mid-range speaker switch to functions as -6db/Full On as opposed to Full Off/-6db. Game changer for me. I wish I had the powered MAS 18 to compare it to. It would be interesting.

I am very excited to give this newly modded DS a whirl tonight at my regular(outside) Tuesday gig.

It's great to hear a company that does upgrades at no cost to their customer's. That's the kind of design flexibility that's part of Acoustic Images builds into their products. Other companies frequently

re vamp their products and leave their customers out in the cold. If you want the upgrade, you have to pay for it.

I'm revisiting this thread because I just obtained a used DoubleShot and one-channel Clarus SL. I've only used it on one gig so far in a club with less than ideal acoustics, but the results were encouraging. The drummer mentioned that my amplified double bass sounded very natural. I also used my Fender Precision for a few songs and it sounded fine with that instrument as well. I may experiment with raising the amp as other have, and my Quik Lok laptop/mixer stand may be perfect for this. At this point, I'm not sure if it will replace my Markacoustic AC101 or just be another option for double bass amplification.

I'm getting a new Doubleshot Combo this week. Do others have any recommendations regarding placement/positioning/raising the Doubleshot for playing at smaller outdoor venues? I'm wondering how well the side-firing speakers will project without walls -- and the same for the front-facing midrange. My first such gig is Saturday, and as of now, I'm planning on raising it a bit...if I can find something to put it on....

5min of setup experimentation is all it takes -YMMV depending on physical space, but if outside keeping it low to the ground will give the sound something to reflect off of— ie placing on a deck or concrete walk will give you more presence than floating in the air — I raise my cab when theres a sound issue im trying to eliminate.

AI stuff is amazing, the more I experiment with them the more im pleased.

This is from the DoubleShot manual:

“The DoubleShot should be placed on the floor near and slightly behind the player. Place it so that the grill (and midrange driver) are pointed to the front. Avoid placing it so that either of the 10-inch drivers are against the wall. It’s ok to have the back of the speaker against the wall. Feel free to experiment with placement to find the situation that sounds best to you. For instance, try placing it on a table or stand.”

Did my first (outdoor) gig with the new Doubleshot last night. It received a big thumbs up from my band mates and the audience. I could also hear myself quite well most of the time. One mild surprise was how strong the low end was (it was placed on the grass). The only sound adjustment I made was to set the high-pass filter to about 11 o'clock (Clarus SL). I intentionally left all of the equalizer controls flat the entire night. Next time, depending on the location, I might try adjusting the controls to get a little more string sound. Other than that, I love the small size and lighter weight.
