Through the years I have used (chronologically) Boss, Trace Elliott, EBS, Aguilar, Maxxon Pro, and now am back with EBS.
What I was looking for in a compressor has changed over the years, when I started (about 30 years ago) I played a Precision and played with a pick, (and I was young)so I needed something to "smooth thing out". Boss took care of that, but then I started playing finger style and Jazz basses and being new at that I "dug in" a lot, I discovered Trace Elliott Multi Comp which was excellent (too bad the adapter was so big)
As I started to play more relaxed and all my equipement got updated, so the EBS seemed the best thing for me (and affordable)...but bassplayers seem to be musicians always on the lookout for something different, so after reading Bongo's review I thought I try the Aguilar, the Aguilar was a lot like the EBS (imho ofcourse) except that it didn't have the option to boost the signal, and that was something I couldn't do without, so I thought I try the Maxxon Pro. All seemed fine except that after a few gigs, I had the feeling that my overall bass sound seemed to have changed, not something I really wanted, so I went back to the EBS. I must say that after owning 3 EBS MultiComps over the years they seem to sound better evry time I buy a new model (or it can be just something I imagine)
In a nutshell what I expect from a Compressor is that my bass sound doesn't change and it keeps the overall output of highs and lows a bit more "together". I think this newest EBS compressor does dot (it is set on Multiband)
