New Amp for Nickthebassist.

It goes into Ohm's law and Power triangle!

V= I x R where V=Voltage I=Current R= Resistance (impedance in AC)

P (Watts) = (Voltage)² / Resistance (Impedance)

Remember series connection you and up the resistance(impedance) of the speakers to get a total resistance(impedance) from there you can work the power to each speaker. In Parrallel however you divide the figures by one!
So each resistance (impedance) is divided by one and then you invert the total to get your final resistance to use in the equation!

Sussed?

Yes your right, it does go into GCSE and even A level maths!

There is a great book out for any one confused, seriously if your not sure buy it! It's called Sound Check by Tony Moscal isbn# 0-7935-35559-x. It explains everything you need to know about speaker hookup and impedance matching as well as the maths.

You would have to check the levels coming out of the line-out socket! If it is a solid state amp then there is a set bias at which it will amplify the frequencies. If your level going into the amp is too high it will flat top or in the extreme kill something in the amp!

Do some research into it, but i wouldn't! Some amplifiers to have the option for an external speaker, but I have no experience of the connection involved.

Nick,
For God sake's, listen to these experienced people and go through with it---get a new amp. Your 60 watter isn't enough power to sound good (to a bass player) in a bedroom.

I have my gear setup at home, in a room that is about 20x 15. I have 3 amps, a 210 watt Ampeg, a 100 watt Fender and a 60 SWR. In this small room, with just me playing bass, and no crowd, you know what amp gets zero amount of use? No, it isn't the 210 or the 100. It is the 60 watt SWR that gets zero use, except by my sons for their microphone. It is one year old, and has about two hours on it. Sure, it is a nice little amp for what it is, but to truly hear and appreciate your instrument, no matter how cheap or expensive, you need a good amp. The other two get tons of use, and do any bass huge justice. I like the Fender for my fretless for its deep thump, and the Ampeg for everything else, as it has such perfect tone. The SWR does NONE of my basses justice, and never has.

A 60 watt amp has a hollowness to its sound, because there is not enough power. You need power, Nick. Go with a new amp, and you just might be satisfied with every bass in your arsenal. You'll also be amazed at how your creativity will improve---you will surely grow as a player with an amp which matches the quality of your guitars.

Andrew

Hmmmmm. That's too bad. What 60watt SWR is it.

My SWR WM12 is the best amp for my bedroom and small gigs. To my ears and at lower volumes it sounds better than my SWR SM 900 + Yorkville 2x10 & 1x15 cabs.

Dont forget to mention that speaker cabs are always connected in parallel. GCSE maths? :D Its just algebra!

Sorry, let me explain,

resistance = DC (Direct current)

Impedance = AC (Alternating Current)

There are meters such as a multi meter which can be used to find the impedance of a speaker. If you want to be the muts nuts by a low resistance ohm meter!

If that fails normally the manufacturers print specifications or at least state what speakers they use, google it and there is bound to be a web page with the speaker specs!

Good Luck!

i suggest that you take everyone elses (or well at least the majority of peoples) opinion and get an ashdown. i have done a quick bit of shopping for you and found this http://www.musik-produktiv.de/shop2/shop04.asp/artnr/3266061/sid/!06082002/quelle/listen

its an older model ashdown mag, but is brand new here for €550 thats about £370 and is way better than the electric blue series that was initially suggested. if you get this as it is you will get about 200watts out of it but if you want to invest a little more you could get a mag 1x15 cab and get your full 300watts. total for the two will be about £535+shipping. well worth the money and dont hesitate because this model will probably be gone soon enough

a preamp is the tone shaping section of a head. It has all the equalizers, the overdrive circuit, and other goodies. A poweramp is the part that changes that sound into pure power and sends it to the speakers. A head is when both of those units are combined into one.
You don't NEED a preamp when you have a head. But diff preamps can give you diff sounds.

+1 for Ashdown. I use a MAGC210 combo myself (2x10" speakers, 300 watts) and I think it's a great amp. I love the way my bass sounds through it. I'm still astounded that such good amps as Ashdowns are can be had for honey of a price.

A pre-amp also increases the mi-nute signal from the pickup to a signal which can be easierly amplified by the power amplifier.

I know for a fact amps such as the Marshall B150 a control in the pre-amp which lets you choose between solid state pre-amplification and a circuit designed to replicate the tone of a valve amp.

Are you referring to the separate preamp units you can buy? Some people will use a separate power amp and preamp. Preamp brands like BBE, Sansamp, Demeter, etc and Power amps like QSC, Crown, Crest. People prefer this because of more tonal options.

I'll join you on this shopping trip if you come up to Manchester. I'll also give you a rough guide to Ohms & Watts and stuff. I also say get a Mag they're great amps. Although I did try quite a nice Warwick head the other week should still be here if you come up soon

Toasted looking forward to wailing on your pedulla with a pick and big bracelets that eat paint :D

Any one else interested in this mini TB Manchester gathering :ninja:
