that's it guys, you've persuaded me....I think the Ashdown it is...me and Toasted will probably meet up in Leeds at some point and go round trying out amps, but I do have to say, my Spector sounded PHAT through an ashdown 4x10 combo, so I'm hoping it'll be SIMILAR to the 2x10(yeh, 2 less speakers, but same amp, i hope).

I'm surprised no one mentioned power amp + pre setups and maybe a 2x10 ashdown cab to start? You really don't want used so you could try Avatar for some high amount of shipping...oh well. Seems like you made your mind up.

You can't go wrong with an Ashdown.
A few years back, I had an ABM rig. That was the time I was essentially playing rock. That was a fabulous amp. The reasons why I let it go were that 1/ I wanted to downsize my rig due to my asthma problems, and 2/ I was playing less and less rock.
Now I have an Ashdown MAG300 rig (w/MAG-210 cab). Basically the same thing as the ABM, but without the touch of "drive", and minus two bands on the EQ. And the MAG is way less expensive. My complete rig cost me less than 700 EUR, new.
Finally, I wish to specify that in the past I had several high end amps (SVT's, Sunn, etc.), and I believe I'm able to say if a bass amp is of good quality or not.
Believe, the MAG series kills.
If you want some "drive" but can't afford an ABM, you might consider a MAG + an SABDDI, for instance.

A quick correction. The Bass Cellar is in Denmark Street and is to be avoided at all costs. Especially the old bloke with glasses who goes under the disguise of trying to be a sales person.
The Bass Gallery is in Camden Town, London and the nearest tube stn is Camden Town.
The Bass Centre is now part of House of Guitars in Brune St near Liverpool St stn. It used to have sister shops in Birmingham and Manchester.

my advice would be to check some 2nd hand shops, take your bass with you and see what you like.
But Ashdown is great, you can't go wrong with it

nick won't do second hand. otherwis ei would have told him to find a used trace elliot smx 300. Beats the p*ss out of most 600 watt amps as far as volume goes and sounds terrific.

Nemesis ROCK! I loved my 2x10 combo and it served me well for 6 years of solid gigging - large and small - 200watts and pretty portable - you should be able to get one for around 500 and they can handle some serious low-B bashing.

I'd love a Mesa/Boogie, just like MK used to get his growl. How much would one cost second hand? I don't want to go too expensive as I have to get myself a new 5 string at some point, and it's probably gonna be a warwick vampyre/streamer/dolphin.....hehe
You cant afford Mesa. You would almost have to buy new, and even a littl Walkabout head costs £999 here.
new they're about 1500 pounds, plus sus-4 shockmount case is 300-400 quid new on top of that, so that's 1900 quid of amp new.
I'm ideally looking for 1000 ukp for mine including the sus4 rack case. I might go down to 900.

The Ashdown sounds like a good idea for the budget you have. Top it off with a 'used' SansAmp Bass Driver DI and you should get all the growl you need....
Ok, stuff the Mesa, far too expensive.......Ashdown is winning. I'll be trying one hopefully within a week or so....
If I get a combo, will I still be able to use a Sansamp bass driver? What is one? excuse my dumbness....
