New Ampeg Preamp

It's about time they did a one-rack space all-tube.

But it's too late for them for me, I've already switched my daydreaming to the Aguilar single rack all-tube.

However, I will use their cabs as long as they exist.

Eh . . . The SVP-PRO is a one rack space, all tube preamp and has been out for quite a while now . . .

Maybe you should familiarize yourself with what the company has put out in the last ten years before you blow them off.

Unless you're saying there needs to be a one-space all tube poweramp, which is just ridiculous, unless you can get by with like 5 watts.

Maybe I'm missing your point.

That's actually a good suggestion and one I haven't thought about. Hmmmmm, two pre-amps, sounds cool
You could also set up one or two ABY switches to switch between them.

Im pretty sure that you can just switch the Sansamp on and off with a footswitch and I probably would get one if I needed to do so mid song, but Im sure its not the only pre with that option.

Peace

Obviously it isnt. I didnt see a 5 way ultra low know or two buttons for highs on any of the SVT CL heads Ive come across.

I ask you, how hard it is to yank out the power section of an SVT and put the preamp thats left behind into a rack casing?!

Peace
Nick

Well, no cookie for you....

Actually it is the old preamp, with a few added features.

There are more settings in the ultra-low, including off, low cut (classic) ultra-low(classic), sub cut filter, and ultra-low (modern).

There is a mute, a bright and a pad switch added, as well as a peak light.

However, comparing it to a 1972 schematic shows it to be virtually identical to channel 1 when the added features are off.

I am not certain exactly when they will hit the stores, but I suggest trying one out when they do.

Cheers

Why dont they just put a copy of the pre-amp as is in a rack case?

Obviously there are plenty of people who would go for that, thats probably the main reason the Sansamp RBI is so popular. People are buying that for the Ampeg SVT sound.

I think that by adding these "bonuses" they are going to be throwing people off. Part of the apeal of the SVT is thats its a very simple straightforward design.

Im curious, what is the setting on the five way knob that gives you the exact sound of the deep switch on, and what is the exact setting that gives you the deep switch off?

Peace
Nick

i had an older svp pro that i had absolutely no noise problems with. i only got rid of it to try out a mesa 400+. i currently went back to the svp pro, and ended up with a newer style one ($300 shipped yeah!!). i switched out the tubes that were in it for some jj's and it sounds amazing. i mean...i guess it hums alittle bit, but it's nothing that you'd hear unless you're sitting right close to it in an extremely quiet situation. but i guess i'm just thinking in terms of rock bands. i don't know. i just know that i'm happy with mine!

Times have changed since 1972. For instance, quite a few folks right here say they want other things besides "just" the old "Ampeg sound". So SOME new things are necessary.

But, as I said, the circuit is virtually identical. Same "straightforward design". So there are a couple more settings on the switches, so what? If you don't use them, they are not an issue.

Magnavox/Ampeg drawing 591719-1 "Model SVT preamp" rev C dated 8-72 has the following switches on channel 1:

Bass select: Bass cut/off/ultra-low

Ultra-high: on/off

Midrange select: 3 positions

The SVP-CL has duplicates of each of these, same circuitry. Plus there are a couple extra positions offering variations.

If you can set an early 70's SVT to a setting, you can set the SVP-CL to that setting also, and the circuit will be the same.

'nuff said?

So you got any info as to the list price and appx time we could see these in the stores? I definitely want to check one out since I passed that early 70s SVT in favor of a power amp.

I dont know man, I just thing that there is plenty good a market for the "SVT sound."

Maybe its just me who's thrown off by the extra features. I just feel like the more thats added, the further it'll be from the early design.

Peace

Well Nick_man, you're certainly entitled to feel that way. I personally disagree with you. If these new "extras" are going to make it unable to acheive the svt tone, then I can see your point, but as Ampeg_Insider said, you will have the ability to set the SVP-CL to exactly the same settings that you could set a vintage SVT to, PLUS there are a few extra settings. Those extra settings are going to make people want to buy thise sucker. Why? Because we want to know what other tones we can get out of it. Still seems like an extremely simple preamp. I doubt people will get too confused from using it.

I do agree that there is plenty good market for the SVT sound. I also think the SVT sound can be added on for other SVT-ish type sounds. Ampeg seems to agree, afterall, they need to sell their new product.

Does the svt-IIp do a decent vintage svt tone? how about the svp-pro? everyone seems to think the sansamp rbi does a decent svt tone too. Well, now you get a preamp that has the exact same options as a real svt, + a couple extra features for those of us who like... um... more options.

Anyways, to each his or her own. I just wanna hear some reviews on this puppy!
