I've been playing bass for a long time and have a lot of main stream basses; really more than anyone needs. However, sometimes you notice something that's been there for years and suddenly it's calling to you. So that's the case in this new to me bass. I have recently been attracted to the quirky looks of Rickenbacker. I have never owned one, and really never played one, but there's just something about the look that has grabbed me.
I can't justify spending the kind of money it takes to buy a Rick, so I started looking for basses that are inspired by the Rick. That's when I found this one at my local pawn shop; it had been sitting there for two years patiently waiting for me to take serious notice. It's what some folks call a Jacksonbacker; not really a copy, more of an inspired by thing. It's in like new condition, and since they had it so long I got a really good deal.
Does it sound like a Rick; I have no idea. It does feel good in my hands and has a wide range of tonal options; however it's not a Rick and never will be. I have never owned a Jackson, and I'm not a heavy metal player, but I like the available sounds this bass offers. Don't know the year of manufacture; the serial number contains both a 74, and a 79, so maybe it's one of those years.
After my purchase I checked out some online reviews and most rated it pretty good. It's a thru neck design and there's really no wear at all on it; makes me think it has been a "closet queen" since it was new.
I understand the rule; "no photo, no bass", so here are some pics.
Thump on,
