I voted MIM Jazz. Here's why:

You already have a MIM P Bass. I figure, you must like it, because you are looking to buy another Fender product.

I just purchased a 2011 MIM Fender Jazz. I find it to be outstanding.

It would be a great thrill to me, if I had your budget, to land such a nice bass and sock away the balance for a rainy day.

I'd suggest trying an MIM Jazz bass.

I went from a Silvertone P bass (my first bass) to a MIM Fender Jazz bass and I'm very glad I did. The neck is much thinner than a P bass neck, making it easier for me to play more difficult lines, it can get more tones than a P bass, and it sounds better than a P bass when tuned to Drop D IMO.

In that price range I would be looking at pawn shops, used music stores and craigslist. Older Ibanez Roadstar/Roadster, Musician/Artist are great for the dough. Look for the ones with the 2+2 Gibson style headstock. I find they are a bit nicer than the later ones with the Fender/Musicman style inline headstock (not that the headstock makes much difference).

The Musicman Sub bass is a great deal if you can find a used one.
Though if I had my heart set on a Fender, and already owned a P, a Jazz is the natural next step.

But I soooo wouldn`t be able to do it that way ahahahaha
Knowing myself I would run to the store (well in my case I would have to fly to London or drive to Dublin) I would try something there and I would get Musicman StingRay, or sterling (planning to buy one of them in the future haha).

only reason to stay away from the MIM from my experience are the necks. The finishes are not uniform at all and i have had 2 truss rods break or strip out after 4-5 years of play. again this could just be my luck but i play a MIM jazz with a warmoth neck and it plays great but i have replaced pickups and such. My main bass is a Highway One p bass and the new ones have badass II bridges stock!!!
