so here i go into the adventure of my 5th electric bass build. i am close to completing this: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f57/beardley-8-string-guitar-shortscale-bass-860633/ and my next bass will be the twin to this guitar. the body is poplar that i got from my local home depot, the neck is a 5 piece laminate of maple/red oak/curly maple/red oak/maple, and the fingerboard is purpleheart. these exact same woods were used in the building of the 8 string guitar.
as far as specs: unlined fretless 36" scale, set neck, string thru body floating bridge, single pickup (probably EMG 45HZ) black hardware, etc.
gluing the body halfs together
had to add some width to the end of the neck to accommodate the 3" width.
my signature headstock. i tweaked it from my previous builds. i like this much better.
here is my body shape. i really like this look. since i did a double cut-away for the 8 string, i wanted to do something similar for this 6er. so i drew up this design which combines my upper horn from the guitar and the lower horn from my basses.
here is the body with some of the carving done around the outer edges and the neck pocket bored out. i used a small block planer and a rasp to shape the outer edge. which makes this process so much easier to complete.
with this being my 5th bass, and over all 7th project, i finally feel like i am getting somewhere. the 8 string guitar is the best work i have done to date and i feel that this new 6 string will be even better.
