my birthday is in a couple months and i'm trying to convince my parents to get me a new bass. i'm looking at a new Squier vintage modified jazz bass. any suggestions other than this for a relatively low price?

Go with an SX. It'll kick the Squier's butt and your parents will love you for saving them so much money.
You've obviously never played the new Squier VMs. I'd get a Squier as long as it's in the price range. All around the VM Jazz is a killer bass that you'd expect to be a lot more expensive.
