Get a Rickenbacker. Easiest to do if you go used. Warwicks are good, too, as are Fender Jazz basses, and Wals, though the last might be scarce, as demand far outstrips supply recently.

Or of course, you could just go try as many basses as possible and see what you like best.

If you like metal style more try a Music Man. Sure it's more pricey but it has a deeper tone.

Musicman is 4 times his budget. Look at an ibanez SRX

In that case... definitely buy used. A used Schecter or Traben might be good. Ibanez has got some good stuff. Or Peavey.
