New Bass

Just picked a brand new MIM Fender P. I'm really liking it so far. Will probably replace the strings soon for my usual DRs but it plays smooth. One mod I'm interested in doing soon is adding a thumb rest. Here's where it gets unusual; I want to put it between the bridge and PUP. Has anyone ever done this with their P? I like the more resistant feel and trebley sound I get playing close to the bridge but I don't think I've ever seen a P with a thumb rest there. If anyone has any experience with that, or any pics please post.

Congrats on your new bass. It's nice when you get one that just "fits".
I've seen the thumb rest on a few between the pups and bridge. If that's what works for you.....go for it.
You might consider a white pearl pg. I just added one to my Candy Cola/Maple. Looks great.

I usually use an old black belt for a thumb rest. I cut the size I want then use a sharpie to darken the cut marks. I also file off the sharp edges so it feels smooth. In the past I would use double sided tape to hold it in place. Now though I started using the industrial velcro to hold it in place. So far it's working well. I put mine parallel to the pickup to the end of the pick guard in between the bridge. I don't think I would put it on a nitro finish or bakelite pick guard but it seems to be just fine on plastic. I also have one in place on my stingray but in front of the pickup.

:D Thanks for the kind words, all. Diesel, I'll jam extra long tonight for you.
A white pearl pg would look pretty nice now that I'm envisioning it. Maybe I'll get both and switch them out.
Has anyone ever seen a thumb rest that's smaller than the normal Fender/generic brand ones?

I'm thinking maybe half to 3/4s of the size of that.

Could you post a pic of this?

I dunno, yet I'm still considerin' better for you to go with the traditional thumbrest anyway

The position you identify is the one of Jazz or P/J bridge pickup, so you'll get a little more snap

Cheers,
Wallace

I bought an ebony tugbar from a guy in Accessories and it is shorter in height. I may even take a little more off and use it on my J/P/J 4 to compensate for the missing B string. I plan on angling it from the neck to the PUP.
