So: the short version is I've got a new Ibanez ANB306 that has horrible directional hum, and my Google-fu and/or reading comprehension are weak enough that I haven't been able to suss the problem. The pickups (Bartolini xxM56C) are supposed to be humbuckers, but sure aren't bucking that hum, regardless of the balance knob. I've got two other basses with various humbucking flavors that are just fine.
The only thing I can see that might be wrong is a ~2cm square bit inside the electronics compartment that's missing conductive paint (which is deeply annoying on a ~$2K bass, but that's another story). A visit with the ohmmeter tells me that everything seems to be grounded just fine, and consulting the wiring diagram tells me everything looks to be wired up properly.
So I throw myself on the kind and knowledgeable mercies of all you good folk. Is it as simple as needing a couple square centimeters of conductive paint in the electronics compartment? Do I have a bum preamp or pickups? Is there some clever troubleshooting I can do, or should I just (*groans inwardly*) send it back?
