I just put a new set of belcantos mediums (3/4) on my Shen & I noticed there is some very small spaces in between the windings where the strings go across/bend over the bridge. Is this normal?

That's pretty normal. If you're concerned about friction, you can use a pencil and apply some graphite were the string meets in the bridge.
Nothing to worry about, false alarm, stand down, keep your panty hose on, don't fret.... (thinking of more cliches...)
