New Boss multi effects for bass

I just watched this and he’s the only one so far that mentions the stomp box way of using the effect.
It helped me getting a basic stomp set up ready but I would love to be able to add a compressor first of all without loosing any of the other 3 effects as stomp possibilities.
Maybe it’s not doable.
I’m not really interested in using it in regular memory mode with more than one effect per foot switch.

I have mine set up similarly to what your describe. Always on compressor > OD > chorus > touch wah with the last 3 mapped to the stomp buttons. There's an amp and speaker model b/t OD and chorus when I use it to practice with headphones, but I don't run the amp patch live.

I'd like to add another comp and some EQ at the end of that chain, but it can't be done. The delay and reverb slots are locked to delay and reverb, which is a waste of two slots for my usage.

Overall, though, I'm very pleased with the unit. For $200 especially. I use the Global EQ as HPF/LPF and to slice out boomy lo-mids, the effects I described above, and the pedal for volume that can click over to a wah, plus it's got a built in mute/tuner (when I stomp up and dn together). I happen to have a GR Bass amp with an aux 9v power supply built-in, and the current draw of the GX-1B is low enough to run it from there, so setup is really easy. I have not used my HX Stomp since I got the Boss unit, and I don't see why I would again. The Boss is less flexible (no parallel paths and more limited routing for example), but it does enough things well enough and it's so much simpler to use that it meets my needs better. The boss is a lot easier to tweak on the fly without menu diving and scrolling. The phone / pc apps are basic (HX Edit is way better looking), but they do what they are supposed to do.

So there might be s way to get an always on compressor first but 3 other effects mapped to the stomp buttons. I just need to understand how you do that.
Is it maybe depending on me having all three stomp effects using the fx1, fx2, fx3 and I have to have the octaver under the fx1 where the compressor also is located.

But the way you put it there is a way of mapping only selected effects to the stomp buttons but an always on compressor active without it having to be activated with a foot swith?

I’m still learning and just got the effect and I’m not sure if I’ll keep it. But I like it and if I could find a way around getting the compression active that would probably make me keep it. Great size and value. I don’t like the HX actually, maybe I’m the only one
Sold mine and been using an old Zoom B3 for years. But this small Boss multi would be a modernization and a neat way of getting what I need in a live situation… if I can learn how to do the above compression trick.

As I start to understand, since I use the 3 FX blocks ror octaver, synth and chorus there is no way for me to activate any sort of compressor without sacrificing one of the 3 FX blocks to have the compressor active. Am I right or is there a way around this?

I believe you are right. the difference, as you noted, is that the setup I described has an OD in one slot. The setup you want has effects in all three of the "FX" slots, which leaves no spot for the compressor.

My friend just brought over his new Boss GX-1B to dial in. Last weekend, he brought it straight to the gig and it didn’t sound very good.

So, we built a couple of USER patches for his basses. The factory patches have a dynamic microphone selected by default on the output. Changing that to FLAT improved (tone) things greatly. The first patch is for his active Sadowsky bass. So, we had to dial input gain way down and output volume up. The bass no longer overdrives the Boss. He selected an Ampeg SVT amp tone and an 8X10 cab and we saved it. He was happy and we tested the patch playing while listening to recordings. It’s good in the mix.

Next was his passive Precision bass. For an amp, he selected FLATTOP and a NATURAL speaker. It sounds like a P bass, with strong fundamental frequencies. It’s now his user patch #2.

The GX-1B is a good sounding unit. Clear, low noise, open and dynamic. I liked it a lot. I might have to get one for my bass playing wife.

Spent this afternoon playing with the GX-1B again using the Pedal Bend to shift pitch rather than the Pitch Shifter effect, which was suggested to me on another thread as being a much better option for pitch shifting with the GX-1B. I will say that it is definitely "better" than the other two pitch change options on the unit, meaning less of a chorus effect when demoing it against the other pitch change options. BUT there is still a definitely noticeable (though noticeably lighter) chorus effect when the Pedal Bend is engaged. Compared against the Stomp it's no contest - the pitch shift on the Stomp is completely clean, no artifacts what so ever. So unfortunately, for my uses the GX-1B is no bueno. Which is a total bummer, I really like several of the amp sounds and the other effects I've played with all sound good. Definitely a good sounding unit (minus the pitch shift options) just unfortunately won't work for my needs.

Anyone interested in a very slightly used and basically brand new GX-1B at a (reasonable) discount from new? Purchased from Sweetwater less than 2 months ago and probably doesn't have more than maybe 10 hours of home use on it, if that. Shipped in the original packaging complete with owners manual (that I had to print out from the website page by page). My loss, your gain...

I have a Boss GT1000 - does the go-1b have a lot of amps and effects not found in the GT1000?

Have you tried the specific GX-1B effect in the FX1,2,3 blocks called "Tune Down" ?

Couldn't make the Pitch Shift option on the GX-1B work for my needs/uses so sold it off. At a loss of course... Chalking it up to "nothing ventured nothing gained". IMO it's a quality unit and I'm bummed that I just assumed the pitch shifter would work as well as what I was already used to, but it just doesn't. Not even close. Ended up picking up another excellent condition sightly used Stomp as a backup to my several year old and trustworthy original Stomp so I've managed to covered that base. Moving on...
