I don't think you can change the order on the Digitech, you can on the Boss. I actually like the RPO order and wound up changing to that when I was using the Boss. Maybe if you played around with the auto record you could get what you want. The single pedal is always going to be a dance. I just really found the Digitech Stereo to be more user Friendly. I will say the pedals on the Boss are easier on the barefeet than the switches on the JamMan. Either is a good pedal.

New Boss RC-3 and RC-30!

Here's the official Boss US response I received when inquiring about the RC-3 phrase lag bug:
"Thank you for inquiring about our products!
We appreciate your concern and comments. We have already forwarded this information to BOSS Japan. We're hoping that they release an update or provide a way to switch phrase locations seamlessly in the RC-3/RC-30 in the near future. "

And here's the official response from Roland Canada when I reported the RC-3 phrase lag bug. What a useless hopeless answer. Very disappointing!

Thanx for supporting BOSS. There may be a 1 sec delay to upload next memory: this function was essentially to switch from a song to another without having to reach down. If you want to be able to switch from a phrase to another (Intro, verse, chorus), you can try our BOSS RC-50 which offers that option. You can actually record three independent phrases on three different pedals on the unit. It also offers more control over your recorded loops: independent volumes, PAN, more drum patterns and more.

I just found this RC-30 review which mentions the phrase lag bug and how it's predecessor RC-20XL didn't have this problem. You can say the same for the RC-3 - it also has the phrase lag bug but it's predecessor the RC-2 didn't. I really hope Boss releases a fix for this soon.

Well I just bought one. Think I am getting lazy in my old age. Tired of playing the repeating basslines so record it and go off do something else. It may be interesting. It sort of makes it like studio work in a live gig. We shall see. My guitarist got one too so we can create together. What I really need is a magic voice box so I can sing like a bird.
I gigged with it last night! I was only brave enough to do one song and I chose Fleetwood Mac - The Chain - the little riff in the middle of the song that loops through the end of the song. It worked out so I didnt need to focus on that and I can just add some E's and Fs and background vocals. Its easy enough for an old guy to learn and its already an official member of my pedalboard closest to the amp.
I found it interesting to play with the built in rhythmer and make up basslines to it and play it back. If anything its a great practice machine to hear yourself, build basslines and its a kinda fun. I am planning on trying my own Kashmir loop on the electric bass. I may need to raise the strings and use a bow to get the proper effect.

Regarding the lag on the RC-3 and RC-30, it is my understanding that it's eliminated when using these pedals with the FS-5 or FS-6 footswitches plugged in. Considering all the tap dancing you need to do to use these pedals effectively anyway, owning an FS-6 is not a bad add-on to have.
I was excited to see a version 1.2 ROM update for the RC-3 on the BOSS US website. I have no idea what got fixed and there's no explanation. I proceeded to download it and update my RC-3 (it had v1.1 from the factory). Sad to report that this update does not fix the phrase lag bug. There is still a delay between switching phrases having the same drum pattern and bpm saved. Using an FS-5U foot switch doesn't help either as pjmuck suggests in the previous post.
I really hope BOSS fixes this bug soon. I've gone back to my RC-2 for live performances in the meantime (which doesn't have any phrase lag).

Generally, the below link summarizes looper/recorders (I was surprised to know there are 5+ in fairly direct competition with the RC-30, already knew about the Jammman Stereo).

Here's a hypothetical scenario (maybe not)..... My DI preamp box has XLR direct out. This RC-30 (and the Jamman) have XLR direct in. So it is safe to think one can record via the DI box straight into the looper's XLR?

Great news to report! I recently noticed that Boss posted a v1.3 firmware update for the RC-3, RC-30, and RC-300 on their US website. Not sure exactly when it was posted but I suspect a few weeks ago. I updated my RC-3 with the firmware and can happily report that the "phrase lag" bug is now fixed! I saved the same drum loop to several successive phrases and the playback when switching phrases is absolutely seamless. Enjoy!
