New Build – SpaceBass 5 string

Now that we see pics of the built bass (and it really is a beauty!) allow me to invoke the second rule of TB.

The title is what brought me to this thread - was expecting a Saturn 5 rocket theme (something I have been pondering).

That is a great looking bass though! Nice work.

Got the bass back from my tech today and I'm really happy with how it turned out.

I just now saw this Kris - wowbobwow! Really nice build! Love the way you finished it - kind of a tiger/zebra antigua look! And you did a super job of composing the grain pattern. How did you manage to get the lower neck flange to nearly match the body grain? I know you are probably less inclined to keep working on it now that it's built-up, but I could definitely see some of that body finish on the neck/headstock. As in, the same dark halo going lengthwise on the edges, leaving the center wood exposed and full dark on the headstock back and edges w/the face left as is. (sorry- ignore me I'm just excited!) It looks like you positioned the upper strap button on the back of the horn - I did that on both the Steinbacker and the Supersonic and I love it there both visually and functionally. Is it passive or active, and if so what type of preamp did you use? And strings? I bet it sounds/plays great! Also - who did your headstock decal? I've had great difficulty finding someone who does quality water-slide decals and can deal with creative design issues.

To me the build process is creative, challenging and fun, and the final product is a reward that expands/inspires your own creativity as a musician. Rock on!

Thanks for the kind words and lining up the grain was a very painstaking process. Believe it or not the body is actually 4 pieces and that was the big reason I blacked out the edges.

I actually had my first gig with the bass last night and it killed it. The instrument is passive but I added a extra dumb knob just in case I wanted to add a preamp later on. The strings are DR low riders (my go too's) and I couldn't be happier with this bass.

Which Shanahan's? I lived in Chicago 78-88 and just visited for the 1st time in a long time last spring. Stopped in at Chicago Music Exchange and played a $20k '61 Jazz bass. (like butter!) Great city.

Still loving this bass it became my main gigging instrument soon after completion. That said I'm really toying with the idea of adding a bridge J style pickup. Any suggestions for something really mid forward and aggressive (talking serious honk here)? Also not looking to spend a ton either.

Hey Kris - saw this by chance looking for an old thread. Glad to hear you bonded w/your cool custom 5'r. I love playing my SS. My advice would be to stay w/a Duncan pu. (the bucker is a Duncan yes?) I would contact them and have them recommend one of their J pu's that would best work w/the bucker. Are you going to position it in the center of the neck pu & bridge? Will definitely give you some pop.
