Sometimes really bad things happen at LedBelli Bass:

5-String fretless neck for sale . . . really nice![]()
It fell from the benchtop (shown) to the floor). The unanticipated weakness was at the 1/4" jack penetration . . . the Spalted Maple top and back, and the Ash core opposite the penetration near the horn, were of insufficient strength to keep it from breaking in half.
The Spalted top and back provided little or no strength to the construction. What held it all together was the frame.
I've found another Spalted set that may suffice to start a new body. I will be re-thinking the approach to the chambered body with this newfound wisdom . . .
are spalt veneers available? i would think that would be a decent option, at least for the back - a veneer or thin layer over another thin layer of maple or something similarly strong.
man, that's tragic, that was a really pretty looking instrument.

maybe not chamber so deep and leave some of the core along the back
BTW, I must be getting better at all of this . . . I didn't even cuss! Not even once!
Anybody out there got a line on a wood supplier that would have bookmatched Spalted Maple? Blanks must be 24" long and 1/2" thick.
Total bummer.
Contact the guys at Link Removed I'm sure they will have the 1/2" just not sure about the 24".
A sad day in woodworking indeed, but I don't see anything that a little duct tape couldn't fix. =/
Well, that's what you get for using technically rotting wood.
I wish that didn't happen though, that was really one of my one favorite exotic looking basses. I'm really sorry.
