New Car Search....

Okay so long story short, I was in a wreck about a year ago and in the search for a car, I thought I'd come here for help since I sometimes haul my bass gear.

What is a good mpg car but can also comfortably fit a cab (not a fridge) and head in road cases and the bass of course, as well as have the seats available for passengers. I would like a new Camero or something beast, but its not convenient for the music stuff at all.

So I'm sure I'm not the only one who's been through this. Let me know all suggestions please!

Budget is at most $8000 I think... I don't mind used as long as the miles are low. Mpg is what's important. And newer the better. No older than '05.

I'll second the Impala. Ran the wheels off a 2000 Impala 30K/year and replaced it with a 2008 that now has 92K on it. Bought both used. The trunks on these are huge. I fit all my gear in these and even can put my DB in the 2008 with the bucket seats.

Mileage was right at 28MPG on the 2000 and I'm just a hair under 30MPG for the 2008. 30% city driving.

minivan ... with seats that fold into the floor.

alway's room for people... even with your gear in the back.

you can get a pretty awesome decked out minivan for 8grand ...

i've literally camped inside, used to haul gear and various other things... and it's nice to have a big vehicle that carry's lots of people on the night out... pack up your friends and only one person in the group had to be DD ...

Id go with either the minivan or a hyundai santa fe. The santa fe is a half price version of the rav4~ even have the same parts.

I got a 98 jeep cherokee xj, and I love it...and hate it. The seat is NOT 60/40 and it gets 20mpg if I'm lucky. It really doesn't hold much with the seat up.
The santa fe has more room and better gas milage....and 60/40 seats. Good reviews online....you should be able to get a real nice one with low miles for 8k~ as I almost got one for 5.

Actually, in re-reading this, no older than '05 and sub $8000 is going to be a stretch. There are only a few cars that I can think of that would even come close and they're all tiny.

I tried and tried to look up proof of this, but without reading a million forum boards, its just not available. When I was looking into an s.u.v. for kayak transport/gig vehicle I researched the santa fe A LOT. Granted...I was looking at older models, but many times I read that the older santa fe's and rav4's were basically the same vehicle with a fair amount of exact parts. I know a parts guy with napa and he said the same thing. It was a general concensous that buying a santa fe was getting a rav4 at half the price.
All I can find now is newer models and specs on them, and without chasing down parts lists....I have no proof at all of what I'm saying. So..........take it with a grain of salt I guess. :o

Did you perhaps mean the Tucson instead of the RAV4?

I mean the Santa Fe and the Tucson are both Hyundai vehicles, made in Korea, by Hyundai engineers, of which the Santa Fe is based on the Sonata platform, where the Tucson is based on the shorter Elantra platform....

whereas the RAV4 is a Toyota offering, engineered in Japan, and based on their own Corolla platform, which is a Toyota mainstay, and nothing at all sourced from any Hyundai designs or vice versa. There is no badge engineering going on like Toyota did, say, with Chevrolet during the GEO campaign.

There just aren't any interchangeable parts. And certainly not to the degree you claim.

i'm in a 96 chevy tahoe right now, so when i finally give in to mpg i'll realize just how small everything else really is! but i'm with turbo on this one. i've been eyeing the chrysler pacifica. roomy and kinda macho in black/chrome. could be soccer mommey, too, if you're not careful :D but the black with chrome looks pretty sweet on them. they fall into the 8k range newer than '05. plus they have awd and some even come with dvd and 5.1.
