About the Dodge Magnum...Chrysler is improving in quality from the past several years but unfortunately they still have some issues from what I have read. The Magnum is discontinued but it is the wagon variant of the Dodge Charger which is still in production (albeit redesigned).
I always liked the look of them, though I doubt gas mileage is very high, though I can be wrong.
Anyone have experience with Scion? I trust Toyota and Honda because of experience and since Scion is made by Toyota I assume that says its good to a quality... I saw that Scion cube thing has some good mpg and possibly can hold gear... And the TC seems pretty roomy in the trunk as well.
Toyota Venza. You won't believe how much gear you can get in it. This was mine until my wife made me trade it in on a Highlander for her (I got her Lexus). Loaded on top, at Pismo Beach below.
I drive a 2000 impala right now. how many miles did you have on it before you got the 2008? I have 191,000 on mine right now and it runs great, mostly highway miles.
I got a 2013 Subaru Forester 2 weeks ago and love it. But, before I got the 2013 I looked at the used models because they're known to be very reliable. On the subaruforester.org website, a forester owners club, they have a high mileage club where some owners clocked 300K+ miles on them. A 2005 is around $7k or $8K. Good luck.

Chevy HHR... 30 MPG highway, bunch of storage space, and can be had at the high end of that range. Not to mention even the oldest one meets your age requirements.
I have 102,000 miles on mine with the only issue being the brake rotors warping prematurely. But I don't know anyone else with this issue.

Try harder on the Mazda 3. My wife is driving Mazda 6s for many years without problems and I had a 3 as a rental. IMHO it drives 10x better than the other generic compact rattleboxes in the price range. Really nice cars. The only problem is that some of the cool options are being held back for the "Mazdaspeed 3" which is a gas guzzler, aka they aren't available with the small engines.
Toyota Yaris is cool, cheap and affordable. So are the Scions that look like a truck. It may cost a little more but when you end up saving 100 bucks a month on gas and repairs are rare and cheap it starts to look better.
The Mazda 3 is great, but for more serious gear hauling, get the minivan version, the Mazda 5. We have an early one from 2006, and it's the most reliable vehicle I've ever had. The mileage isn't fantastic, but good enough. Though light on power, the darned thing is even fun to drive, and I say that having owned a Saab 9-5 Aero, Jetta GLX with major suspension mods, and Acura TSX.

get a scion xb or maybe an xa. best car I've had as a bass player. suuuuuper reliable, 30+mpg, easily loadable with huge storage due to the full back hatch, and it's comfortable with room anywhere for 6ft+ people. awesome!
I can fit an nv610, nv412, a tube head, pedal board, two basses, Merch,, and a passenger comfortably.
