I have read that shock labels do not deter people from taking part in dangerous activities. People just tend to look it, see the image, avoid looking at it again, and think "Meh.. that won't happen to me."
People are funny, they do not want to be told what to do by the government, but rely on the government telling what to do.

I dont think smokers think "Meh.. that won't happen to me." as much as they are just already aware of the dangers involved in smoking.

True, many are aware, but there also tends to be a good deal of the populis that thinks "never me."
And true again, not everyone needs big brother, but sadly, I think a huge part of the population does.
When natural disasters strike, people rely on big brother and his holding company to get things done to make life normal again. People would rather wait around in the dark then take some type of initiative to do something about it. Hell... I wonder how many people can successfully make a proper fire pit nowadays...

Honestly, I dont know if I know how to make a "proper" fire pit.
However, I know full well that I could put together a pit that would keep my fire well contained and not burn anything down.

That's pretty insensitive. If my city was flooded right now, I'd be too busy treading water to "take the initiative" to rebuild infrastructure.

It works when they have an open mind and interest in multiple genres of music. I know this is a generalization to the maximum... But open minded people tend to be better off on survival. To think, and act outside the box seems like a concept that many people lack, or do not seem to desire.

My wife and I wtch the jersey shore. We're also both musicians. Conundrum?
If they really wanted to do something they should put pictures of diseased lungs, throats, lips, tongues, etc on the packs. Make it take up both sides, and have the brand name on the side. Sell them in packs of 5 or 10 only. No bigger, no carton sales, Federal Tax of $.50 and State Tax of $.50 on each cigarette, plus whatever the manufacturers and retailers deem to charge. Make the fines for buying and selling them to minors actually hurt. Enforce the littering laws for the obnoxious b^#*%!@s that are too lazy or stupid to dispose of them properly. No smoking in any Federal or State buildings or grounds. No smoking in any building open to the general public.
Lincoln is one of the cities that banned smoking in bars, restaurants, etal, that is a good thing. But all that did was turn the sidewalks in front of the bars into big public ashtrays. Enforce the littering laws!

If too much is enforced... I smell a riot.
I do agree on those people litter, but that usually goes for the plastic, foil thing, an carton. Butts are probably the only thing I ever litter, unless you consider food scraps (apple cores and such) littering. The butts are made of cotton and some other stuff that goes around the cotton. Its all biodegradable. However, it does look trashy when everything is a giant ash tray. I hate to throw butts on the floor if I actually do not see any one the floor already. I sometimes will keep them until I can properly get rid of them. I even apologize to the earth when I throw match sticks on the floor.
People disposing of food stuffs doesn't bother me. I know that insects, birds, and other things (yes that includes disgusting rats) eat it and/or it breaks down. But it seems that butts just last forever.
And I know a lot of people don't dispose of them by throwing them on the ground, and I applaud them.

I never kept tabs on the life of a cig butt, but I did clean up an area of them. It was just one person smoking so we cleaned it up. A lot of em were just the cotton and looked as if they were breaking up after a short time. I imagine the reason why they never seem to go away is because so many people just toss em to the ground. So as soon as one goes away, there are another 10 to replace it.
I agree with you entirely on drugs - I think that banning drugs is insane and entirely counter-productive. And tobacco is just another drug, and I wouldn't want it to be banned. I consider myself a libertarian - anybody should have the right to choose to do anything, no matter how dangerous, so long as it doesn't harm others.
But how does requiring tobacco packs to have health warnings on them interfere with the free market or fair trade? The warnings are all based on very thorough science and the pictures are of actual smoking-related illness. These ARE the facts, the real facts that you are calling for.
The government isn't stopping anyone from smoking or banning the sale of tobacco - they are just informing the tobacco-purchasing public of the risks involved. Hardly the nanny state or a conspiracy to deprive people of their personal liberties. This is just a regulatory matter, in the same way that governments require safety warnings on potentially dangerous equipment, or nutritional information on foods. Useful information, based on good science that may influence your decision (or not) to purchase a product.
If the government banned tobacco it would be a clear violation of the individual's right to kill themselves any damn way they choose. My father climbed mountains, my sister throws herself out of perfectly good aeroplanes, my brother races fast cars, I go kayak fishing in shark-infested waters; I certainly don't want the government to ban any of these activities - but I'm quite happy for governments to inform me that all these pastimes are risky. They are.
Similarly, I choose to smoke. I know the risks because of the government warnings and education campaigns. I incur the risk by my choice - but it's an informed choice. Without the warnings and education campaigns people would be incurring those risks in the absence of accurate information - how can this be a good thing?
I appreciate the humor in the fact that people have NO problem with big brother running private corporations, or squashing individual liberties as long as:
1) It doesn't affect them
2) It fits their personal agenda
3) Both

Of course, but how do you separate the 2? Isn't it just as likely that the fat is killing them as much as the coffin nails?
