Double Bass New Crack ...

Just noticed a new crack on my bass

I'm planing to take it to the luthier tomorrow.

Right now I'm afraid to touch the bass cause it might
get bigger. Also I got a gig on Saturday and I think
I shouldn't go in case the bass is not ready.

What do you think?

Personally I wouldn't worry about that a whole lot. Play your gig, get it fixed when you can. Just my opinion, I'm no luthier.

It should be a pretty simple repair.

Do the gig, get it fixed, carry on.

My school's Juzek has a couple of long saddle cracks on the top; besides that, the bass hasn't even been given a setup in at least 5 or more years. I've bugged the music department to get the bass fixed, but no dice. So I'm playing on a bass in much worse condition than yours. It still sounds fine and plays okay, and as long as nothing major happens, it will remain in pretty much the same condition as it has the past several years.

So follow the advice above and you should be fine.

Hi Giannis, how are you?
I left Chania and right now I'm in Thessaloniki for summer holidays.
I saw the photos of the crack, and it doesn't seem to be a problem. You can play your gig with no danger. My old bass has a similar crack -which I must repair it sometime at Loukakis luthier- and I've played many gigs without problem.

Just a small advice:
You can mark with a pencil the points where the 2 edges of the crack are. So you will be able to check if the length of the crack remains the same.

Really, what did you do finally with the strings, did you switched to Spirocore or you are always with Black tapes?

Thanks everyone for the answers.

At least you made me feel better. I didn't like the crack when I saw
it, especially the position (down shoulder - G side).

I will mark the crack, but I will take it anyway today to
my luthier to give it a close look just to be sure. Maybe
he can do a temp patch to keep it from opening more.

My guess is that the crack made in the car. It's the side I put
it there. Greek streets and especially Heraklion are famous
for it's bumps....

Panos nice to hear from you. I got the Thomastic Spirocores
and I have them placed on the bass almost a month now.

The seem a bit darker and not as loud as La Bella 7710,
but the sound is getting better and better and I'm getting used
to it. Also they got a great sustain compared to the blacks.
