New Crown Xti 1000..Help please.

Hello all,

I am in great need of help.

Here's my rig:

- 6 space Gator rack with:

-Sampson Powerstrip PS15
-BBE 482i Sonic Maximizer
-Line 6 Bass Pod XT Pro pream
-Crown XTi 1000 power amp
-Hartke Hydrive 410 cab (rated @ 1000 watts RMS)

Goal: Set Crown XTi 1000 in mono-bridged providing 1000 watts into the Hartke 410. I have the 1 "1/4" inch output input from the Pod sent to the the XLR input of the Crown in Ch. 1. OUtput from the Crown is from the Ch. 1 Neutrik output to the Hydrive. I also wish to set the high pass filter at 40-50 Hz.

I have downloaded HiQnet Band Manager V. 1.0 and have all the hookups set and plugged. No problems here.

Question: I have set output mode to bridged-mono along with the input sum being set at (Ch. 1 + Ch 2). Is this right? Do I have to set the input "Y"? I know that I want everything to be driven from Ch. 1 to Ch. 1 output.

Also, for the High pass filter, do I access from EQ section of Band Manager? They do not use the term high pass filter but I assumed the low shelf filter in the same thing. Is this right? Also (sorry BUT I'm excited to use the new amp) what do I set the dB level at considering I want to "cut off" everything below the 40-50 Hz range??

Hey, thanks for any input. Greatly appreciated.

Happy New Year !!

Marc:hyper:

Pfft... he'll probably have to talk to a guitard over at HC and then the amp will die fo' sure.

Go here instead.

You are on the right track... Just set the amps output to run bridged/mono and then connect the Channel 1 output speakon +1/+2 at the amp and +1/-1 at the speaker cab

Then play around with high pass filter in the Xover section - and consider adding a - 3 dB clip limiter.

Good Luck!

I have this amp ,I use it on my highs on jbl 722 cabs.
its a good amp, bridging that amp at 4ohms 1400 watts.
in band manager click on the crossover section there you will be able to adjust high/low pass filters/ no need to y the input.
you will have to wire a speakon to 1 + 2+ on the end that plugs in to the amp, and 1+1- for the end that goes in your cab.

Hey guys, thanks for taking the time to help.

I don't understand the "wire speakon 1+2+ at amp end and 1+1 at speaker end"

I had a cable made at the music store (Neutrik speakon) and I've plugged into the Ch 1 output going into one of the parallel speakon inputs of the Hartke hydrive cab. Do I need to do more??

Thanks, Marc

If it was made for you and it works leave it alone.
When this amp is in bridged mode, it takes the positive from ch.1 (+1)and positive from ch2 (+2). You can also use the banana plugs on the amp,both the red ones . The positive on Ch stays positive and the positive on ch2 ends up being the negative.
if I could type with more than 1 finger I could give more info

Hey Death Metal Jim, Appreciate your patience.

I hear you about the taking ch. 1 and ch. 2, does it change anything that I am only inputting one mono signal into this XTi 1000. I'm using thre Pod XT Pro's 1/4 inch "model" ouput and putting into Ch. 1 input of XTi (I had this 1/4 inch to XLR male cable made also.)

Thanks a lot,

Marc

RTFM

Look at the manual I linked above - and the picture I posted - read this bit in the manual and refer to the other sections referenced as required to complete your understanding:

2.6.2 Bridge-Mono Mode
Typical input and output wiring is shown in
Figures 2.9 and 2.10.
NOTE: Crown provides a reference of wiring pin
assignments for commonly used connector types in the
Crown Amplifier Application Guide available at
www.crownaudio.com

OUTPUTS: Connect the speaker across the red binding
posts of each channel. Do not use the black binding
posts when the amp is being operated in Bridge-Mono
mode. Or, connect the speaker across terminals 1+ and 2+
of the Channel 1 Speakon connector (as in Figure 2.9).

IMPORTANT: Set the Bridge/Normal switch in
the LCD screen to “Bridge.” See Section 4.1.4.
NOTE: In Bridge-Mono mode, only the
Channel 1 Level control is functional (unless you
make an alternate selection via the “Y” menu.
See Section 4.1.4).

Here is another picture using the binding posts to connect the speaker in bridge mono versus the speakons

Seriously. The question has been answered a couple times in this thread and a couple dozen times elsewhere on this forum.

Me said:
This is what you are actually doing: You connect the positive terminals of the speaker boxes to the hot(positive) side of channel 1, and the negative terminals of the speaker boxes to the hot(positive) side of channel 2. Then you send the same signal to both channels with the polarity flipped on channel 2. That's a bridged mono power amp.

With speakon plugs on modern amps you usually get two 4 pin output jacks. The first, which will be labeled 'Channel 1' or 'Channel 1/2' will be wired:

amp channel 1 positive -> pin 1+
amp channel 1 negative -> pin 1-
amp channel 2 positive -> pin 2+
amp channel 2 negative -> pin 2-

This can be used for just channel 1 with a two conductor cable wired 1+/1-, for both channels stereo using a 4 conductor cable, or for both channels bridged using a two conductor cable wired 1+/2+.

The second plug,usually labeled 'Channel 2', will be wired:

amp channel 2 positive -> pin 1+
amp channel 2 negative -> pin 1-

with the other 2 pins not going anywhere. All you can do with this is run channel 2 with a 2 conductor cable.

The other option is the banana plugs. From top to bottom(or left to right) the four terminals correspond to channel 1-/channel 1+/channel 2+/channel 2-. You use the top two terminals for channel 1, the bottom two terminals for channel 2 or the middle 2 terminals for bridged mono. No assembly required.

Anyway, the point is you want to get the positive side of channel 1 to the positive terminals on both speaker boxes, and you want to get the positive side of channel 2 to the negative terminals on both speaker boxes. Wire up whatever cabling solution is convenient. I like banana plugs.

I appreciate everyone's help.

If there is frustration in having to "repeat information" I apologize. I have been referring ongoingly to the manual as well as to the Crown site. I just have not been getting it--It's new to me.

I don't have a lot of experience with anything other than plugging 1/4 inch cables. This is new to me. I have "gotten it" regarding the 1+2+ at the amp output and 1+1 into the speakon input of the 4-10 cab.

My learning curve has been steep. An example is that I have inspected the speakon to speakon cable made for me at the music store. IN reading, I have learned that 1) I would have to had specified my custom wiring needs when ordering and 2) They should have not used NL2FC but the NL4FC.

THX AGAIN!! Marc

I am about to buy an XTi very soon. It is pretty easy to set up and run? I just want t run one channel at either 4 or 2 ohms.

Happy 2010

dave

yes, its very simple to run. i used this rig/head at a gig last night and i couldn't be happier with it. it was very punchy, articulated and responsive. The EL8 allowed me to just lay it into the mix at any level i wanted .

head=demeter HBP-1, EL8 compressor, xti2000.
cab= 2x12 (3012LF) /6.5" (630SS).

Thanks JohnK. I've just gotten the same Demeter Preamp from TBre rpsands. And I'm about to buy a power amp and I'm thinking the Crown XTi 2000. I only need to run Channel 1 and I'm thinking of having a dbx160A between the Demeter and the XTi. You really like the combination of the Demeter and XTi I take it. What cabinets are you using ? What kind of music are you playing?

How do you set up the filters or shelving I believe they call it. I want to set a filter to filter out the extreme lows like 30 or 35 HZ and below. Do you do this in the software? Are there presets? I know I need to read the manual. I'll also want to have a limiter on so as not to blow any of my Eden cabinets.

Thanks in advance for all the info and help. :cool:

yes. i do. the xti sounds great.

i'm using a 1212/6 'type' of cab with it (modified 2x12 vox cab with two 3012LF's and a 630SS mid driver). we do mostly classic rock, mixed with a little bit of funk, r&b, & soul.

you can set the HP filters with the software using the usb on your computer, and assign a preset number to it, but i didn't use any filters on mine. i did set up the limiter at -3db, and that can be set up right on the front panel without the software. if you're going to use a dbx160x, you may not even have to use a limiter. i also have a 160x and may try it in this rack as well, just so i'm not dragging around the EL8 all the time.

Yep you need NL-4FC at the head at least. I only buy 4 pole speakons here as the price isn't much different and it is an investment in the future if I need to wire up something else.

Your amp will not mono-block without a 4 poler, unless you use bananas. On my SVT-4PRO's there's a switch to push that causes the amp to connect the two channels together to drive both in mono, I would assume you have to do something similar in the programing on the Crown.

JUst be carefull here, you probably have enough power in one channel to drive that 410 cab fully without needing the mono mode, I'd try it stereo first just to make sure.

Nothing worse than smoked voice coil times 4.

Or... just remove the speakon off one end... the wire ends may be OK as is , but strip the wire ends a bit more to about 3/8ths inch [9mm] if they are too short... twist em up in a nice tight smooth stub... unscrew the red binding posts all the way and slip the stubs one at a time into the holes on top the red binding posts and then finger tighten em up nice and snug... check to make sure you don't have stray wire "hairs poking out the top and Bob's your Uncle.
