New Custom Bass finished: Warmoth+Modulus+DiMarzio

Absolutely killer Blackburst top! The whole package goes together greatly - the Dinky J body with that Quilt and finish (dead-on as to what I'd like to get when I'm in the position to order an "Ian Perge Custom Mike Lull" ;) ), the Graphite neck with the beautiful patterning on the back, and although I'm an "Active" kind-of-guy, that's a very nice Passive pickup choice as well as top-notch hardware as well.

The end result looks great! After the PM'ing we did when you initially came up with this idea, its great to see that you ended up with something you like.

Now let's get some live pics so we know you're using that beauty :p

Hi Silk, it's great to see you back checking out the final result... thanks for all the help along the way, all the discussions and feedback I received definitly fed me the right knowledge to make an informed decision.

As promised, I will post better pictures hopefully tonight, and will try to come up with action pics soon also! What's new on your end btw, any updates to your collection?

Right on bro! That was exactly my conclusion when I finally settle for these parts.

The black burst finish with the quilted maple goes really well with the black KLD finish of the neck. Definitely a great combination.

What route did you end up going for the neck attachment? Threaded inserts like we had discussed?

I seem to recall Modulus shipping their necks with a set of inserts... Or was that Moses? I know Status ships their necks without inserts and instructions for using conventional screws. I've never been in love with the idea of using wood screws for a graphite neck (maybe I'm just being pedantic on that one) so I've always gone the stainless steel threaded inserts and matching stainless steel machine screw route. I've never done an A/B so I can't say for sure that there's an improvement as a result, but since I've put in the work to have inserts I'll allow my brain the placebo to be convinced that its an improvement :p

Modulus does in fact ship their bases with threaded inserts already mounted, so that was one less hassle to deal with. They looked rock solid so it is comforting to know the neck is well bolted-on.

I’m totally with you when it comes to inserts. Without having conducted a scientific test, they should provide better grip and stability to the neck and body. Rob Green from Status had informed me that his necks have a piece of wood laminated to the back pocket plate, hence not needing inserts as the wood acts as a strong base to bolt on. I give him the benefit of the doubt, but my opinion is that one has nothing to lose by installing threaded inserts.

After playing around a little bit tonight, all seems fine with the sound expect for a grounding issue... Whenever the bass is plugged and I'm not touching a string, a loud buzz is heard... It only fully disappears when I touch a string or either of the knobs on the pots or the bridge… So I presume this means that the circuitry is not properly grounded, and that I should start a shielding project…

I took my bass to a luthier to be assembled. I wonder if he actually noticed this issue. I’m going to have to contact him again to see if he knows how take care of this.

What input you guys might have on this regard? I researched on these boards regarding shielding. There are a few nice threads around, but my issue is that I just can’t do it myself (I don’t have the expertise nor the tools). So I always need to contact a luthier. The issue there is that I can never manage to find one I can fully trust. This last person was the 5th shop I have tried in Montreal. All the others were pretty incompetent in the matters of bass guitar or trying to rip me off while doing a half-assed job.

Anyways, any feedback will be much appreciated!

Well Hitman, it's been a long ol' road, but you've finally reached the end (well, almost) and have got yourself a bass that'll last a lifetime in the process :).

I gotta say, that Modulus neck looks fantastic and the satin finish sounds like a major bonus too. Those tuners really suit it as well (very Flea Bass ;)).

As everyone else has pointed out, that's some serious quilt going on there, too :bassist:.

I'm afraid that I can't offer you much assistance with the shielding issue :( (my SuperJazz buzzes as well, and that has Nordstrand humbuckers in :(). The advice that I was given was to shield the walls of the pickup cavities (which I never got 'round to), as well as the inside of the control cavity, which I did do before I assembled it ...

Anyway, I hope that your Jazz lives up to all expectations in the tone department. I didn't fully appreciate mine until I'd recorded with it - the depth of the low notes was truly suprising!

So, go on! Go put some fingerprints on that bad boy :bassist:!

;)

My love for trans black basses is a well documented fact! I followed your earlier thread with the blem issues from Status, and I am glad to see your dream become reality finally!
When you get the buzzing sorted out, I am betgting this bass will sound as great as it looks. I have one question- how did you get the Modulus neck and how long a wait was it to receive it?

Hi Akito, I remember you from that old thread also, thanks for good words!

I bought the Modulus neck online at planetbassonline.com. I just checked out there site and they don't seem to have any fretted necks left in stock. I believe the wait for a new Modulus replacement neck is around 6 months. You can call to better be informed. Back at the time of my purchase, he had satin and gloss finished and fretted necks available. I think I bought his last satin 'cuz he took it off the site the day after :hiding:

string-it.com sells some also, but also out of stock.
