New Custom Bass finished: Warmoth+Modulus+DiMarzio

Hi everyone,

For those who followed my custom bass project from the following thread:

http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=476200

Here's the result of the project finally arriving at destination:

- Warmoth Dinky-J body, Alder body + Quilted Maple Top, black dye finish
- Modulus replacement graphite J-Neck, satin finish (like butter)
- DiMarzio Model J (DP123), wired in series
- DR Black Beauties strings
- Schaller 3D4 bridge
- Schaller strap locks
- CTS 500k pots (N PU vol + B PU vol + Tone)
- Machine Heads came installed on the neck, Gotoh style

I haven't had the opportunity to spend too much time on it yet, but my first impressions are that it's the most wonderful instrument I could ever imagine owning!

I will give you all more updates shortly. These are also not the best pictures I could produce, but for now I just wanted to share the joy! :hyper:

Again thanks for the thumbs-ups everyone! As promised I will provide better pictures and feedback in the days to come as I have not had time to have a serious one-on-one with it.

Amazing build!!! how much was the total cost?

I still haven't finished the final accounting of the costs inccured. I believe after it was said and done, it cost me somewhere around 2.5k canadian... that's around 2.2k USD.

Isn't a Modulus neck like... 750.00? :(

Yes indeed, it cost that much :crying: ... However, if there is a need to spend that much on a neck, then either a Modulus or a Status graphite will provide almost a lifetime of goodness... Having played only a bit, I can already feel the difference the graphite makes... I don't know how to describe it, but it's almost like the notes are cleaner, more defined... Plus the satin finish on the back of the neck just makes you feel like you're playing in 0-gravity!

Nice FrankenModulus!

One can just about swim in that quilt! :)

:D and you can top it off by grooving it on with the spacey exterior layer of carbon, the KLD (thousand ladies dancing) :bassist:

Hitman. That is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. Congratulations. What became of the Status neck? Are you going to put it on your Geddy? Here is my Status necked jazz that I put together at the same time you were going through those issues with the blemishes on your fingerboard.

Had the headstock painted to match the body. Please no hate on the Fender decal. It is only there for my own aesthetic sensibility. A more traditional pickguard and control plate are in the works:)

Great looking bass you put together (and I ma sure it feels and sounds great too).

I know that I may be proposing a headache, but if both necks fit the body, try changing the Modulus neck with the Status one to see how both feel and sound. I've done it myself and it was worth the effort. Just an idea

Hey Mr.Bassie, thanks for the compliments man, means a lot considering you followed my project all along!

The whole battle of the Modulus vs Status came down to 2 simple things: Looks and finish. Both are built to the outmost perfection, both have generally the same feel in your hands. On a personal level, I found the Modulus a better looking neck to go along with the type of body+finish I chose. Plus, the satin finish is really to die for. I wonder if Status has that option instead of the standard gloss...

I still own the Status. It's been untouched since I received it... still brand new. I'm waging an ongoing debate inside of me regarding what to do with it. Why I'm now hesitating to put it on the Geddy is because I'm starting to feel that I don't want to mess with an "Artist Series" replica of one of my heroes. I want the bass to look like it's Geddy's! So 2 options remain: Sell or start another project  ... which won't happen :rollno:

As for your bass, that's one sparky and lively color you chose! Quite a contrast to my choice of basses: I have owned 4, and all have been black :hiding: But congrats to you too, seems like you created a dream project also. Is that your Status Neck on it? If yes, then did Status do the custom job?

i remember the blemmed fingerboard on your status neck, the resulting build is beautiful, i am currently scheming something along those same lines, that is a gorgeous bass youve got there!!

Yes indeed, the whole story started with the blemish and ended here! I don't know how or when I envisionned building a bass like this, but whatever it was I'm happy I did... I totally recommend anyone to custom build a dream project.

The Status has not been drilled. It has literally been left intact since I received it. Before fitting the Modulus to the body, I tested both just on their own, just to get a general feel... For example, the only advantage I saw the Status have is at its nut: Seems like it's better cut. The Modulus holds the E strings at 1/3 of its diameter, whereas the Status has a firmer grip at more than 1/2 the diameter.
