New developments, promising science

Well here's the link for manufacturer's info on that guitar speaker: Eminent Technology Model Twenty Guitar Speaker and here are the quoted specs, such as they are: "Specifications: Weight 21 pounds, Height 32 inches, Width 22 inches, sensitivity 99dB - 2.83V at 1 Meter, recommended power 20 -100 watts, impedance 8 ohms, Price $2600.00 each, price includes shipping." At least you get free shipping. Do you get a Tootsie-Roll or some Smarties? If so, I'm probably in for at least one.

Their rotary woofer, which looks like a desk fan, might be of more interest to us bottom dwellers. I can't link directly to it, but you can navigate toward the TRW-17 from their home page here: Eminent Technology

They claim frequency response to below 1Hz with this device. Finally... I might really be able to hear my de-tuned low F. :roflmao:

BTW, the patent for the miraculous new technology employed in the guitar speaker allows that, in some instances, the "electromagnetic actuator" might be a voice-coil motor, so maybe it's not quite as innovative as all that. Certainly not as innovative as using the audio signal to modulate the PITCH of the blades of a rotating fan, which is what their rotary woofer claims to do.

Rotary woofers are wild but they're mostly used for subsonics in theaters and home theaters. IIRC their effective range tops out around 25 Hz, so it's only going to be useful if you play with a down octaver. I've heard of home hobbyists making their own, but the key bit of hardware -- an electric fan with movable blades -- is kinda spendy.

How about that?
We seem to have fewer folks asking "why?" and "how?"

What I gather here is that research has become so important that discoveries have slowed; or something like that. It's more about confirming things we know already... but using a different method of doing so. There arent as many surprises, I guess.

Seems we get a thread now and again that some troubleshooting leads to interference. This seems an interesting development.

Resistors are needed in a circuit to control the flow of current, which becomes heat. The reported breakthrough would need to deal with that.
Much of the losses in circuits are due to losses in semiconductors operated at high frequencies. New semiconductor technologies are reducing these losses.

This is what's driving higher efficiencies in switchmode power, class D power amps and switchmode inverters.
