New Dimarzio "Colossal" bass pickups!

Just spotted these new Dimarzios. Only available in 5 string EMG 40 shape for now. Very exciting finally to see some soapbars from Dimarzio.

Those look like they'll be great. My favorite pickup is their Relentless P, which this seems to have taken a lot from.

One of favorite basses ever had some 80"s DiMarzio P-J pickups. Probably the best passive pickups I have personally used.

They are only offered in “5 string size”, but I put that in quotes because the blades will also work perfectly fine for a 4 string.

I can think of some folks for whom 300 bucks for a Colossal Pair would be money well spent.

If they are something special, I could see someone asking Warmoth to cut a four-banger with EMG40 routes for a few more bucks. (They’ve done it twice for me…a small change for a little bit more “change”.)

That said, I guess I’m among those less impressed, and probably not the target audience. Neither looks, nor specs, nor sound seem to work for me... I’ll wait to hear more demos, read more reviews, but I’ll probably pass…

They are probably going to give Aguilar and Seymour Duncan a run for Thier money. The presenter was informative but holy hell that guy playing the bass was not doing any favors. He has zero concept of dynamics and pretty weak plucking technique so we didn't really get to see much expression from these pickups. I notice that from a lot of YouTube gear videos. Lots of people think they sound amazing but you hear them hit a note and see how lifeless it comes out. I just shake my head.

I find the reviews on that channel somewhat of a mixed bag for sure. For stuff like pedals they will often take DI recordings from a handful of different types of players (from clear pros to people who seem much more amateur) within their network of friends with different basses playing in different contexts (including live shows) and reamp them into the pedal- to me that's a cool way to approach a pedal demo since the settings can be adjusted however you want later and you get to hear a variety of different performers and playing styles. They do seem to have cut down on the number of players they use now though (some of the old common ones have their own channels to focus on, probably part of it- or want too much $$$). Then they have videos like this one that feel like they miss showing off a lot of what the pickups are capable of by using a single fairly monotonous player. Getting people to do pickup demos is definitely more complicated than pedals or full instruments in the sense that someone has to invest the time to install them first, but hopefully they get some more varied ones out there!

That's the thing too. Lots of great players who can't even put a string on a tuner just like the many awesome techs and luthiers that absolutely suck at playing. But thankfully I'm sure guys on here will be installing them and posting so we will get a better idea. Just based on the builder alone I definitely see this being good for a little bit of color but still very versatile and EQ friendly. Also very good volume. We'll see.
