New EB Cobalt Flats?

We played an outdoor gig last night and I used my Ric with the Cobalts and it was pure bliss! These strings have been everything I hoped for and more!

Not sure about you all, but my string search has officially concluded. I have them on all (4) of my basses now. No string breakage on any and i don't notice any grabbiness at all anymore.

I have tk agree. I've tried more than 6-7 different strings within the last year or so looking for a string that just done it for me. I've had some very expensive trials and with these I have everything I want. Over a month into them on ever bass I own my only next requirement is how long they last. I'm very satisfied though up to this point.

Well these Cobalt flats sound huge on my RIC 4003, in the iem's and foh at my regular gig. Full, powerful, and articulate. I can hear every note distinctly, and they seem balanced across the board. Still a bit of the "grab" which I hope goes away soon. Just curious what they will sound like once they're fully broken in.

The grab went away for me after about six hours of playing.

The grab never went away for me.

I brought my Jazz strung with EB flats to rehearsal last night, I used it for a few songs, and I was quite happy with the tone. They are still grabby, but it seems to have lessened. Either I'm getting used to them or it's a result of them breaking in. And, I really like the tone when tuned to drop D.

So, just put'em on the PrecisionV....I now "get" why these in between things get so much negative views. If taken just as a set of strings, they seem pretty wonderful....but, note I can't stand new bass strings for a long time, usually. They're very even from low B to G....and the most solid sounding low B I've had on the 5.

But, I've got a 62ri with ancient flats on it....this sounds like a higher output, more dynamic version of the DR Low Rider Steel Rounds I had on this before than the old (Fender I think) flats.

There is no traditional thump here. There IS a nice strong fundamental and a crazy hot output. Lovely low B. Even response across all strings--much better than the DRs that way where the E and B never sounded as punchy as the top three.

Where have you seen negative reviews on these strings? These are quite different from your traditional flats in that for me they have better live in a band setting tone than basically any new string I've played. I have limited experience using flats and can only compare to new sets I've tried. When comparing to TI's and Chromes for me out of the pack is no comparison for the Cobalt's being better in every category. Now you have to realize that I'm a lifetime round wound user and these are the closest to round wound you can find I've been told so that may be the reason I'm fascintated with them lol. Either way for me they blow every string I've tried out of the water.

Your reaction actually read as pretty positive other than lack of traditional thump. In that I'd agree, these are much punchier, focused-sounding, strings than your average flat.

Absolutely. I brought my Jazz bass with the EB flats to rehearsal on Monday, and I was quite surprised with the tone at volume, and how well it sat in the mix. I’ve only had them on for a little over a week at this point, so I don’t know how they will sound in a few months, but so far I’m happy. I don’t think it will be enough for me to give up rounds anytime soon, but still quite impressed.

Got my replacement D string a few days ago, and strung up my Rick 4003 with them. I had to trim the A string a bit, but I left the others full length and strung them up the way the instructions said to. No issue this time. I put a bit of powdered graphite in the nut just to stay on the safe side as far as binding goes. Had to tighten both truss rods a 1/4 turn or so to get the neck back to flat, and I adjusted the bridge height a bit. Not sure how I like them yet. I had no problem with sliding on the strings, I didn't find them grabby at all. The first day they were very bright! I play through a Carvin Microbass amp, which with everything flat really doesn't color the sound at all. Just a clean signal of bass and strings. So bright I turned the treble all the way down. Next day it seemed to have lost a significant amount of the brightness, but the strings as a whole sounded pretty nicely balanced. I'm not sure at this stage where to tweek my amp for the best sound. Right now its pretty close to neutral except for a slight boost in the low mids, and I'm playing around with the high mids both cut and boost to get a variety of really nice sounds. I'm thinking that these would sound really nice on my P bass so I may get another set for that. They have a lot more tension than any rounds that I've used up to this point, but not as much as my Fender flats that are currently on the Pbass. Going to give it some time and see if they have the sound I want. I liked what I heard today when I rolled the tone control for the bridge pickup halfway and had both pickups on. Got some nice bottom with that mids sit in the mix sound. Going to have to let them break in for awhile to see if its going to be my go to string. They sound nice played with a pick also.
